Description
Sneak preview of some art I did for SQP art books "NightSong" almost a year ago - book is finally out - so here's a cropped in shot of my contribution to the book.Pencil sketch and then painted in photoshop. Took about a week for the whole thing (not just this bit).
Clicking on it makes it bigger.

Thanks! Yes, I did use some reference - after my initial sketches and character design (clients brief was for a vampirella-like woman), I took a photo of a friend in her dining room in roughly that pose to help with some of the details and I hung some black cloth on the maniquin in my studio to see how the material folded.

Bloody great! Simply the best work I've seen from you thus far matey!
The shading and tones are exquisite, rendered in a slightly more realistic way than your usual approach this is simply one amazing piece of work...
DD for sure!

Thanks mate - Always good to get the Gavade seal of approval!
Done for the same client as the army cover paint [link] so I tried to loose any of the cartoon feel that generally creeps into my work .

Cheers man! The polish is done with a bit of spittle and a spare hanky, then put through the washer using huggies softner to make it crisp and clean. Had to hang the bat out to dry for a full day though.

Ahhhh, man, I wish I had those digital painting skills. I'm toying with watercolour these days to learn some basics of paint. However, what would you recommend is the best approach for diving into the digital painting realm - tools, tutorials, etc.?

Loopydave In reply to massacremike74 [2009-10-06 04:14:00 +0000 UTC]
Not sure if I'm really the guy to be asking - I'm a self taught kind of guy (when it comes to digital painting) who works with a mouse and not a tablet - but I know I adapted a lot of things I learnt from using watercolours/guache/marker pens etc. I work exclusively with photoshop - just never got around to playing with painter, but I gather it reflects a traditional experience somewhat better.
Step by steps of how I tend to work [link] and [link] if they are helpful, but I'm constantly trying different approaches. I still love the feel of drawing with a pencil and always to my preliminary work on paper then scan it in. I like to keep it fairly simple in photoshop - I stick to basic brushes and do nothing fancy.
Not sure if any of thats helpful, but good luck!

Thanks man! Probably could use just a hint of texture in the material, but I love celtic patterns (bugger to draw though!) and really wanted to add some in.

Thanks! There's usually some aspect to a painting that I look forward to the most and in this case, once the concept had been nutted out with the client, I was really really hanging out to play around with the two different coloured light sources.
