Description
I have a confession to make⦠I'm a sucker for quirky micro cars. While others are welcome to enjoy their sports cars, SUV's, 4x4's or minivans, I like my cars tiny, somewhat underpowered and just a little temperamental.
Recently purchased a 2006 smart fortwo and it amused me that if I applied a logical sequence to the shapes of the cars I have owned over the years, the next one would, in fact, be spherical.
Of course I had to design it and draw up my old carsβ¦.
Pencil sketches - painted in photoshop.

In this case you loved to live in germany during the 50s! BMW Isetta, Messerschmitt Kabinenroller, Kleinschmittger, Gogomobil, ZΓΌndapp Janus and so on. Look for them in the web and be amazed!

I know most of those already - BMW Isetta is one of my favourite cars - pretty much impossible to get here in Australia, but always wanted one just to drive down to the corner store and back in.

There's a book by the german author Hanns-Peter Rosellen. "Deutsche Kleinwagen nach 1945" (german microcars after 1945), ISBN 978-3921097380. 364 pages full of such vehicules! I don't know if there's an english version, but I think not because the market is to small. If you want to order the german one, bad news again: Unfortunately it's out of print!

Thanks for the heads up - I'll have to keep my eyes out for that one. I have a book on micro cars already thats probably not as detailed as that one, but it covers some british and italian stuff as well.

Back to present - or maybe the future. I come from Switzerland. A country which is well know for many things, but certainly not for a flourish car industry. But near the place I live, a small company builds a very interesting vehicule. It's a kind of a cross-breeding between a motorcycle and a microcar. The company's name is Peraves, the thing they build is called MonoTracer. Go to their homepage and be amazed! But here in Europe you need a motorcycle licence to drive it and I guess it's the same in Australia.

GDupons In reply to Loopydave [2012-03-29 00:06:45 +0000 UTC]
They didn't just look fantastic, their performance is it too! Your smarts accleration is 0-60 mph/15 sec? Well, the Monotracer does it in 4.8 seconds and the top speed is 150 mph! OK, it has a 1200 ccm BMW engine and is lighter than the smart.
But that was not enough for them! The developed an electric version, called E-Tracer. An electric motor has a better efficiency than a petrol engine and much more torque. In numbers: 150 kw and 811 lbf ft! It also reachs 150 mph, but in fact, the electronic only stops the accleration at this speed. Theoretically it could reach 180 mph...

Mighty impressive how you managed to combine two things that in my mind are completely different "matter": - the design, "personality" of cars which is based solely on its physical dimensions and shapes
- _your_ style, the Loopydave humorous/goofy/sympathetic sketch spirit
To me it seems like hyper-mastery of car designers' work, since it means you succeed in determining the visual effect a car has (their basic job, right?) but not only that, you can "toy" with this visual effect to make it your own.
Now writing this I realize this is probably not different from a face caricature, however here I find it more impressive, because unlike the case of a face, there's no "obvious human perception" elements to rely on and secure the result's effect... Here it takes a thiner understanding of why the car is perceived how it is, or so I presume.
My hat down to this.

Hahaha, I love this! I'm minimalistic person myself so I love this presentation ^^ Very nicely painted ..and they all are so cute
PS. I agree with someone who said that the future car wouldn't have wheels! I think it would look more futuristic

Nevertheless, it's a very nicely done work! I also love the idea, or the fact that you've noticed it and been able to use it, of cars getting more and more round! I never realized it that much and since I also love round shapes it's just perfect in my eyes
Cheers

A gorgeous display of your rendering prowess mate, and I love the progression of design.
Be great to see another of these in 15 years time and see exactly where the design goes and whether you remain with the micros, will we see you reduce in wheels down to 2 then some crazy encapsulated mono wheel thingy??

Just don't go anywhere near Mr Bean.

Oh. And corners [unless you drive everywhere in reverse].
And you should be perfectly safe!

Lol! Yes, three wheel vehicles have an inherent instability - I probably should have designed it with four wheels - or none and just gone the 'in the future all cars will levitate' route

SlyFXZ In reply to Loopydave [2012-03-26 19:08:27 +0000 UTC]
Aha! I replied to your reply Australian Internet Fellow.
I think the word of choice has to be: 'Moped!'
Think about it:
# 1. Inexpensive to run so no more handing over a small mortage and/or getting bummed at the pumps.
# 2. They tell me 'nuclear fusion?' [whateva that is?] is still a long way off.
# 3. Park it anywhere - so why not park it by your desk at work?
# 4. Low speeds achievable - [define high speed on a moped] - so the perfect city run around?
# 5. Leviation is over-rated: - it never helped Michael J. Fox did it?
So, ignoring 'Instant Death' at the hands of 'The Rockers' and/or hitting a brickwall/monster truck it's gotta be pretty much a no brainer hasn't it?
Great concepts as always...

Man, I want a smart. I hate driving, but I think I could get over it in a car as adorable as that. I like the design on your future car, it's really shiny. Can't help but notice there are no mirrors on it, though.
