Description
WIP background character in a much larger piece - posted here for my buddy who wanted some kind of hint as to what I've been working on over my break. Some people spend their holidays at the beach, others travel to exotic places, try new and interesting foods, customs and gastronomically based viruses. Me, I stay at home, ignore the world and paint.
Not sure how it differs much from when I'm working really

That's now my default image for Cleopatra from this moment forwards, though she probably had lighter hair, that doesn't matter. Β Your work is phenomenal!

Thanks! Probably need to add more jewellery and an asp or two to go full cleopatra, but she definitely has that vibe!

Lovely shapely lady! But oh dear... She seems somewhat annoyed. Her hairdo is a bit xena-esque and there's a throwing ring somewhere in the greater picture... Maybe a would be warrior princess who found out that fighting big beefy barbarians high on Brzk! is not as easy as it seemed?Β Β

She does look Xena-esque doesn't she! Not intentional, but I am a big Xena fan... and I love dark hair, so there we have it
Cheers man!

LOL ...
Yeah, like I'm "Medusa of male sexuality"! I'll not turn her into stone... Don't worry!
It will be something like "One Night Stand" .... and of course she will not be able to remember anything the next day.
"What the hell happened?"... This will be the phrase of the next day ...Β

Hi there, I am trying to learn a similar blending technique with low opacity brushes, but I am unsure of the method to mask off areas correctly. So that the soft brush keeps the crisp edges needed in certain places such as the edge of the body or where limbs overlap in front of the body. Do you think you could write here your masking method? It would be much appreciated. remasking an area over and over when i want to go back to it is so tiresome and i never get it the same each time.
Many thanks, and I am so glad I found your work! Are you ever featured in Imagine Magazine? If not you damn well should be!Β
xx Chris

Quick easy 'trick' for masks... (I'm assuming you are using photoshop)
Once you have created a selection, or mask, create a new layer , then select the 'edit' menu, scroll down to 'fill" and select (that or use the 'option + delete' combo). Hide that layer (click on the eye icon). Now any time you want that particular selection/maks just hold down the option key and click on that layer with your mouse.
Hope that makes sense and helps you out!
Cheers

I love this - it's so expressive and liquid. Even the necklace is moving in an interesting way. Do you often draw background characters separately and then place them into the final piece when working on a larger/busier image?

Not often, no, but the full file of this one was getting so large, it was making my computer a bit sluggish so I resorted to a bit of that
Glad you like and thanks for the fave

Nope, but she did borrow Cleopatras wig, and so far has refused to return it. Moral to that story is - never lend out your wig unless you have a spare on in your closet.

I figured it wasn't really her after the 1st one but could tell she took inspired from her but half-expected her to be related to the original in some way!

I usually try to avoid it - you get a much better result using a soft brush set to a low opacity and painting grades and blends, though I do find the smudge tool handing when painting fur.

ah right, im simply saying it cus i see you used only about 5 or 6 colours. so i presumed you smudged, but if not the case great job, love the detail i hope to learn quite a bit form your work ^^
