Because absolutely no-one demanded it!!... yes, its a step by step guide to painting your very own drunken dwarf. Or more precisely, a visual record of how I couldn't make up my mind on a decent helmet design.Full pencils [link]

Thanks! Drunken dwarf is probably a some kind of redundancy, though not as much as 'bearded dwarf' would be

I'm trying to break down in my head how you paint. Do you paint on top of or under your sketch, just using it as a guide? You don't do any kind of inked lines like comic book artist?
π: 0 β©: 1
Loopydave In reply to pixel-putty [2014-04-03 10:56:42 +0000 UTC]
Yes and yes is the short answer.
Longer answer.... if the piece has not inked lines I usually paint on top of my sketch, but tend to keep another (hidden) layer with the original sketch if I want to refer back to it at any stage.
And yes, I do paint 'under inked lines' as well... here's one example loopydave.deviantart.com/art/S⦠but there are quite a few further back in my dA gallery.
There is no real right or wrong answer in how you paint in photoshop really though... find whatever works best for you I say!
Hope that was helpful.... cheers!

Another great piece..... hahaaaa, gonna have to dig out ye ol' Thes...thesa...thesris...dictionary first(then the other one)... keep writing great so much.
You have mentioned 6000 x 6900 pixels being the size of whole piece...What is the canvas size for this piece Loopydave? ...do you change that on completion?
The ol' draw large, then shrink it down to tighten it up scenario...
Cheers, Bare.

Cheers! If its a commercial piece, I usually work out the size the clients wants before I start, but on a personal piece like this one, I just paint it pretty large so I have an option to make it a poster or something down the track.

whats the resolution of a image like that when you are painting it?

Loopydave In reply to SuminskyArtwork [2013-02-05 03:58:03 +0000 UTC]
The face area in the picture is approximately 2500 by 2700 pixels, but its part of a larger piece (pencils for which is [link] ) and the whole thing is some 6000 by 6900.

wow, I generally stay under 2000 x 2000~ ...thats because I flip canvas horizontally a lot, and it starts get ridiculous slow.
nice to know, thanks a lot

this is by far one of the better "how I paint"s I have seen here on DA so far. It really shows the steps you take. Your work is amazing and very inspiring.

Super nice of you to say. And if my work inspires you to illustrate more drunken dwarves, then all the better - the world needs more pictures of drunken dwarves I say!

so very true....I feel bad for my low level dwarf. If only he'd not drink so much maybe he could get out of Ironforge.

You must let me know where you pick up your drinking helmet sometime! This was a little bit of personal indulgence - practice and fun done around a lot of other work.. cant remember the exact time total, but it really was much longer than it should have been and measured more in terms of days than hours. Still unfinished and sits on my hard-drive waving a beer at me trying to get my attention to get around to finishing it.
