I taught myself to paint in photoshop by trying to use it the same way I used to paint with brush and airbrush.

Great work, Dave! Each step is a piece of art on its own!
Just one question - from step 1 to step 2, you morph some rough pencil shading to a more detailed shading. How do you do this? On Photoshop, using the smudge tool?
Also, any tips on the hair and beard would be awesome!
Great work! I'm a fan!

Loopydave In reply to JoaoRodrigoBaptista [2011-08-09 14:17:06 +0000 UTC]
Cheers! I usually just paint over the pencils - normally on a layer above, keeping the pencils as a guide, blocking the colours in with a hard edge brush set to a low opacity, building up my colours.. and using a soft brush to build up grades. This should give you an idea of the steps between 1 and 2 [link]
As for hair, cant say I'm really that much of an expert.. but the general rule is to start by blocking in your shapes and areas of colour and then work in the 'clumps' of hair and work up to individual strands - still working on getting better at that one myself!

Um... what the? How in the freak do you go from pencils to making it look like it's a photo of a figurine?? What do you use to give the ultra-realistic effect?

Lots of practice, attention to detail and a real lot of patience. I like to block my colours in first and then proceed onto all the fun details.

It looks as though there is no way this gets a response (seeing as though there are already so many), but I just have to say that I am truly impressed and motivated by your work. I saw one of the pieces you colored for A. Ruiz, and in the comments section you said you just use Photoshop, standard brushes, and time. Is this completely true? Can I achieve similar results given enough patience?

Loopydave In reply to robinsor5133 [2011-05-30 16:05:51 +0000 UTC]
It is indeed true. I pretty much stick to the standard soft brush for gradients and soft tones and the standard hard edge brush for flatter areas and edges - I set it to a low opacity and gradually build it up as I work. People have their preferred way of working and brushes they like, but the most important thing is about getting the fundamentals right first (colours, lighting, shadows, how different textures work etc).

Its important to know how to deal with and paint drunken dwarves. Its right up there with learning how to ride a bike, change your socks or feed your pet mongoose.
Cheers!

You're my Idol!! It's Serious. Your works is fucking Awesome!
But I've one Question.. How much layers you normally use?
Continue with your great job and always evolving!

Loopydave In reply to dominicali [2011-04-14 15:45:23 +0000 UTC]
Cheers man, very nice of you to say! As for layers, it really depends on how I'm feeling at the time and the end application. Sometimes I paint it all in one layer just for fun, but mostly I tend to paint each major part as a separate layer - usually keep the forground separate from the background so I can place the picture on a blank page if I want to.
