Because absolutely no-one demanded it!!... yes, its a step by step guide to painting your very own drunken dwarf. Or more precisely, a visual record of how I couldn't make up my mind on a decent helmet design.Full pencils [link]

I demanded it.
I just...sorta demanded it quietly...to myself...in the dark.
I always adore your tutorials, OD. Such a cool inside look at how a sensationally talented biped goes about making foamy moustaches. O.O???
Nicely done, my friend.
Yo rock like no other.
And happy THANKSGIVING!!! Even though you're on a different continent and all that. I'm still thankful to know an artist such as y'all.

! Cheers man! No thanksgiving this end of the world so whatever turkey population we have here in Australia is pretty safe - which ironically makes them very thankful!
Have a great thanksgiving yourself and think of those grateful Australian Turkeys as you do

Very interesting to see you don't render in phases. I don't get how you do it

Actually this was a fairly atypical piece for me - I usually block all my colours in first and then build it up, much like I used to do with water colours and guache paints years ago - but this started as a practice exercise and I kind of just wandered my way through it - you may notice I really hadn't worked out how I wanted the helmet etc.

ehehehe that's too cool, nothing funniest than a drunken Dwarf
The part of the mouth is really amazing, love how you have paint the beer on the mustache
I think you use the pencils sketch just for reference?right?do you set this layer on multyply?or you paint directly over it?

Thanks man! I tend to paint on my pencils, but keep a spare copy on another layer for comparison when my original pencils are painted on.

So typically, how many times do you go over the same area? The nose for example.

Loopydave In reply to Trebeck [2010-11-26 12:26:14 +0000 UTC]
I usually roughly block all my colours in first (didnt really do it this time though) then find an area and start working on the details. I keep moving around until it looks pretty finished, then I like to get out a piece of paper, look critically over my work, and then write a list of all the things I feel I need to fix, tweak, change or finish, then systematically work through the list.
Something like the nose, I would typically block the colours in with the rest then start working up the details. I may come back and work a bit more on the highlights once other bits are done to keep it consistent. I was always going to have a very strong yellow backlight on this and I added it to all the areas in one go (including on the nose).
Hope that answered your question without being too long winded , though its just how I like to work and there is no right or wrong answer - its a matter of finding a way that's comfortable for you.

My art has been improving (slowly (very)) and it's partly due to posts like this.
Looks like you worked in two ways on this (layers under the pencil sketch and also grey scale with overlays for the gold helmet part (this is for ppl wondering what the hell I might meen)
So a big thank you to you sir, and may more follow. 5/5

Cheers! I don't tend to use the grisaille technique (grey tones - add colour overlay) much as I tend to get better results just painting in colour, but in this case I kept changing my mind on the helmet, and what was originally going to be all steel, ended up with the gold/brass of the final picture. In saying that I really do like to experiment with how I work, particularly on a personal piece like this one.

I like this walk through here, it is cool. Shows the basic steps of your process. my hardest time in painting is always laying down the base colors and staying in the lines, but I'm probably doing it wrong. xD

Back when I worked as a designer I never really had enough time to do much colour work so I spent most of my spare time sketching. Still love to get out the pencil and sketch pad, but ironically, now that I work as an illustrator, I have less time just for sketching!
