Because absolutely no-one demanded it!!... yes, its a step by step guide to painting your very own drunken dwarf. Or more precisely, a visual record of how I couldn't make up my mind on a decent helmet design.Full pencils [link]

I think the step by step looks awesome, do you find the painting part relaxing? I only wonder because out of drawing my favourite part is the inking where I start to build up layers, much like you with colours.

Thanks Erin . I'm not sure I have a favourite stage. I love the creativity in working out my concepts with pencil and the feel of sketching on paper, but equally enjoy getting lost in the details as I paint on the computer - its very zen for me and I can (and do) spend days lost in colour and detail.

Thanks man! I went about this one all wrong mostly coz it started as a self indulgent learning exercise rather than as a painting - I didn't block in my colours before I started, didn't work out my background or even finalize how I wanted the helmet, so as a process its not really a. typical or b. a good example for someone to follow .... but the painting of it was a lot of fun!

Honestly it's what I'm planning on going back too in the coming weeks much more pencil on board and less Photoshop, also the way you block in colors first is something I need to practice, if I don't go value first I'm all kinds of lost lol

You may need to find a new keyboard - one that doesn't get stuck on the letter 'w'
Cheers ma'am!

Interesting
Do you really choose your background color at the end ?

Loopydave In reply to PapaNinja [2010-11-24 23:54:34 +0000 UTC]
! No, not usually
- I normally block in all my colours (including background) before I start painting but then this started out as an exercise, rather than a painting in and of itself and just kind of got away from me!

The usual stuff. 5 dollars in change, my licence and a note to remind me to be polite to heavily armed dwarves.

It was a joke. its a viking commercial here in the states. capitol one credit card. They use Vikings in them that look much like your art.

Kind of figured it was some reference that I wasn't aware of - not sure we even have a capitol one credit card in Australia!

Step One: Begin with a pencil sketch ten times more awesome than anything I've ever called a finished piece, let alone a preliminary

Dwarves get a little suspicious when you do that though - and its really not a great idea to raise the ire of heavily armed, drunken dwarves with some kind of literal and metaphorical ax to grind.
Cheers man!

No problem! I was a little less organised on this one than I usually am - I had a pretty good idea in my head on how I wanted it to look, but usually block in the colours for the whole piece, and nut out things like the helmet design (I changed it a total of 5 times before I was happy with it) before I start painting. It was fun to do a bit of working out as I go - comes with the luxury of doing a piece for fun and not having a deadline

Hah, and I already though "he's so organized" hehe!
Well that is one of the differences between a pro
and a dabbler like myself. ^^
Thanks again! You are really an inspiration to me.
