Description Details from [link] . The whole painting was quite loose for me and I made no effort to 'hide' the brush strokes. This isn't really obvious at the smaller size, so I thought I'd post a 1:1 of the hand from the picture just in case someone was interested in taking a peek.

Click on it for proper size.

Do you rotate your canvas much while you're working? I would love
to work at such a high resolution but if I want to rotate
90 degrees or flop the picture it takes maybe half a minute on my
computer (Mac G4). I usually work no larger than 8000 px high at
72 dpi. Doesn't the high res slow you down?

Loopydave In reply to artzybasheff [2009-11-16 11:20:24 +0000 UTC]

I don't actually rotate my canvas when painting - but I do have 30" Mac monitor which gives me plenty of screen area to work with. I often open a second copy of the file Im working on in photoshop and make it small so I have an idea of the 'big picture' view while I'm working on the details. I rarely paint anything bigger than 8000 pixels high but thats can still take time, particularly when saving etc., I probably need to update my equipment too - its 15' mac power book that only can take 2 gigs of ram, which isnt really enough for working on huge files comfortably.

That's what you call loose?? Oh, I'm screaming alright...
Seriously, even more than your artistic skills, I admire your patience and attention to detail. Thanks again for posting your work: not only is it beautiful but observing it helps me improve as an artist myself .

Thanks for the lovely words, always appreciate it when you come by!! Its funny, but I often think my best asset is my patience, not talent, particularly when I'm struggling on a piece and just need to hammer away at it until I get it right!

GeorgeD In reply to Loopydave [2009-11-17 10:07:08 +0000 UTC]

That's a loooong conversation, and something I wonder about very often: is an artist born or made? On one hand I've come to believe that it's desire you're born with, not talent, and a great desire to create art, coupled with persistence and time, will eventually transform into talent. On the other hand I can't help but feel that there's also some form of inborn skills involved. For instance, it's impressive that most great artists had a great sense of space even as kids and where much better painters compared to their peers.

In your case, I assure you, your amazing talent is pretty much a given. Patience and persistence are just a couple of its numerous aspects, and that's something I should remind myself of as well. There are lots of artists I know that are both patient and persistent and still end up with elaborate doodles

brush strokes? what brush strokes?

Loopydave In reply to bachterman [2009-11-16 11:08:57 +0000 UTC]

When my brush has a stroke, I give it mouth to mouth and then call an ambulance- though the mouth to mouth tastes terrible if you've been using oil paints.

Loopydave In reply to alonzobartley [2009-11-16 08:52:48 +0000 UTC]

My usual method of working is - pencil sketch on paper, scanned in and painted in photoshop. I had to stop painting everything with magic lemur tails after the animal liberation movement picketed my studio and computers don't scratch as much.
[link] is a step by step of me painting someones head, and was pretty much the same process I used to paint the hand.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

The hand looks extremely life-like. At first glace, I thought the piece was photo-manipulated.

It would be nice to see your work-through for the hand and what brushes you used or created.

Perhaps someday you can post a hands and feet tutorial for those of us still grasping the awesomeness of Photoshop.

Zo!

This is PS? It's so smooth I almost thought it was Illustrator. Your canvas must be HUGE.
