The King of Shadows left a fragment of himself behind....Yep. Quick lil fanart, tired of looking at it. That new episode was awesome. To all you crying about how flat of a villain Sombra was-well. Eh. Yeah, he was, but so are ALL the MLP villains. Chrysalis didn't even get a name on-screen! You all just like her cause she's pretty. >_>
Sure, he didn't really have a character motivation-(I'm just evil! Woooooo!). He was actually a threat. Nightmare Moon wanted eternal night, Discord wanted to fuck up your shit, and Chrysalis was just hungry. Sombra wanted to enslave hundreds of people. Just cuz.
Also Cadence came in and was like I'M NOT A MARY SUE FUCK YOU, so I love her now

To be fair, she didn't really have a choice. It was the only way to find where Sombra hid the heart. If having to resort to dark magic means saving those around me, I know I'd take the risk of madness. At least it'll be me sacrificing myself rather than everyone else around me. xP

About Cadence - if by "Mary Sue" you mean "damsel" then yes.
Mary Sues can be either super-powerful or super-pitiful, whereas a damsel isn't really allowed to kick flank ever. Cadence received a little bit of characterization from this ep. but still not much. Shining's still at about 0.
I'm very interested in the idea that Twi and Celly used some really wicked-looking magic in order to interact with parts of the Crystal kingdom in the premier. I'm all about the headcanon that Twilight's the kind that would eventually kinna go berzerk after using some kind of magic and her friends will/would have to stop her.

I'm mostly joking about the Mary Sue thing. I think really, its a little cheap to label characters in terms of their usefulness to the plot. Cadence decides to go badass and I love it.

Maybe he was undeveloped for a reason. Maybe it was to show that Twilight and Celestia could possibly be the enemy at the end of this season (due to them using Dark Magic).
