Description
exploring more of Phoenix Fire (later Phoenix Forge), Rainbow Dash's secondborn
1-2.) Rainbow wasn't a bad mom (in fact she got softer and more empathetic as the years went on), but she made a similar mistake as Lightning Dust- viewing her kids as extensions of herself. At least while Stormy and Phoenix were kids. She pushed her own interests onto them, and while Stormy took to high level aeronautics from the moment his flight feathers grew in, Phoenix didn't. She was an okay flier. Average, really. She preferred to box and wrestle with her dad. Dash was disappointed, but she'd never force Phoenix into flying if she really didn't want it. Instead, Dash focused her attention on her son, Aerostorm, diligently training him as a ruthless flight coach. Stormy, lazy and uncompetitive though he was, enjoyed this nonetheless, because he's a big dumb mama's boy at heart. So he and Dash moved forward, forging an iron-strong bond. And Phoenix sort of....got left behind.
Rainbow didn't mean to do it. She thought Nixie was happier this way. Stormy's training (and her own career) kept her pretty busy, but she still tried to make time for Nixie's little roller derbies and math-athons and what-have-you. Most of the time. Some of the time. Look, Dumbbell had it covered, alright?
Then Cloudy was born, teeny-tiny and needing near-constant care, and Phoenix was once again pushed into the background. Dash didn't mean to. Nixie started trying harder to capture her mom's attention. Getting good grades (pfft, no contest against her dummy of a brother), helping out with Cloudy, even entering (and losing) a few Junior Speedster races. Dash made time for her daughter when she could, but it wasn't enough. But that was okay, right? Nixie had more in common with her dad anyway. Nixie was a big girl now. Nixie would understand. They could always catch a buckball game tomorrow, after all. Or maybe next week.
And slowly.....well, Phoenix began to resent her mom. Resent Stormy. Resent the stupid Wonderbolts, and all the shiny flight trophies in the house. And that's when she began acting out......Because any attention was better than none.
Pictured: Dash celebrating Stormy's unexpected racing victory and shiny gold medal (Phoenix only got a flimsy "you tried" sticker), Dash and teenage Phoenix having one of their increasingly frequent arguments
3.) Some of y'all asked about that felony Cloudburst mentioned here:
WELP:
Phoenix grew up into sullen, troubled teenager, and developed a number of unhealthy coping mechanisms. Smoking, shoplifting, vandalism.....setting stuff on fire. It started off harmless enough. Burning garbage, her report cards, stuff that wouldn't be missed. One night, after yet another explosive fight with her mother, she sneaks out for a prowl around town....and happens upon an old abandoned shed.
The windows are broken, the wood is rotting with age. Deep within, she feels the familiar flicker of excitement, the urge to burn. So she sets it alight, and it burns. And burns. And right when it looks to be puttering out....a dry, overhanging branch catches fire.
Phoenix doesn't panic at first, she gets to work putting that out, but it's spreading a lot quicker than you'd think. She's so busy with this she doesn't notice the dead, brown grass around the shed catching aflame. The bushes going up in smoke. So much smoke. It's getting hard to breathe. Hard to fly....and just like that, an inferno comes roaring to life.
The flames rip through the forest, engulfing trees, turning the night sky a hellfire red. Phoenix can't put it out. It's moving too fast, blown by the wind, carried down the valley, headed.....right toward Fluttershy's animal sanctuary.
Oh no.
Terrified, coughing, Phoenix fights her way through the smoke and heat to get to the bell that sits atop Ponyville's town square. She kicks it with all her might, sounding out a brassy ring that echoes all throughout Ponyville. Citizens stumble out of their homes, roused by the noise, the smell of smoke. Phoenix passes out before she can see the weather ponies rushing in with rain clouds- and fortunately, the fire is contained in time. Fluttershy's family, home, and animals are safe, and her sanctuary is not too damaged.
But Phoenix wakes up to a whole new WORLD of trouble. For one, her parents are FURIOUS, both at what she DID and the fact that she could've very nearly DIED.....Dash is so angry she can hardly speak. Nix has never, not once, seen her mom cry like that. Phoenix is charged with the crime of arson, and sentenced to a stint in a juvenile detention facility. She's so rattled by the experience that her rebellious inner fire fades away into nothing. She becomes withdrawn, quiet, depressed, and badly misses her family. Partway through her sentence, Princess Twilight proposes trading the remainder of Nix's time locked away for entry into a youth behavior reform program. Rainbow, Dumbbell, and the authorities agree to this plan, and Nix is placed into what is more or less boot camp, under the Royal Guard.
Although she initially hated the training, studying, rules, and public service expected of her, Nix eventually began to adjust and flourish under this strict discipline regimen. (This is also how she got so jacked). She finishes out her schooling in Canterlot and trains to become a blacksmith for the royal guard, eventually finding her calling in forging weapons and armor, and sometimes, (rarely) the occasional work of art.
As an adult Phoenix still has a bit of her old rebel streak, but she's a lot more relaxed, and better at managing her once turbulent emotions. Although Auntie Fluttershy has mercifully long-since forgiven her for the accident, and she maintains a good relationship with her dad and Cloudy, her relationship with Stormy is tense and rather bitter (Nix has always felt second best in regard to her big brother, and after years of her being mean and petty to him, Stormy remains mistrustful of his sister, even viewing her as the family black sheep).

Oooh yeah gib me dat Nixxie'angst. I do love seeing her as an angry young teen lashing out.
I don't know why sometimes mothers and daughters can have such rocky relationships but is extremely realistic to see here and I'm sure many, myself included, have had such emotionally explosive and draining fights with our moms. I don't think Rainbow is a bad pony...I feel like she's such an exuberantly passionate person that sometimes gets so hyperfocused on something that everything else kind of fades away.
Btw, you draw Rainbow so beautifully. Her vivid colors, her expressions and actions just...*chief's kiss*. Also it will forever amuse me that by pegasus standards Dash is probably considered a fucking knock out beauty with her plumage and dazzling flight skills and she just doesn't give a shit or even notice. Long as ponies think she's awesome
Also, WIBBLE STORMY AND NIX!!!

Dash: *stumbles out of bedroom, bleary eyed and half dead from sleep, wearing a pair of Bell's boxers and an off-white tank top with a (old??) chilli-dog stain on it. No bra, boobs askew. Probably has not brushed her teeth and every hair and feather on her body looks like it's been through a tornado...they have.*
Bell: *consumed by lust. Calmly pushes his breakfast aside and effortlessly scoops Dash over his shoulder and carries his wife back upstairs*
Dash: Wha- *huff of surprised laughter*. The fuck, Dummy? *whines and weakly reaches her hand toward the kitchen. I need coffee!
Bell: Later. Sorry but you look kind of gross and I gotta ravish you senseless now. That cool with you, Crash?
Dash:.....Well if you insist. *wiggles further over his shoulder so she can grope his rear*

their love is a nasti love
they model this attraction in front of their children, later on Phoenix will be perplexed at her fondness for disheveled, fell-asleep-with-makeup-on Vogue, and Stormy will struggle not to smother scruffy half-asleep Bruce with smooches

Everyone everywhere in this universe is a bunch of basket cases. It's like watching a slow-motion train crash.
...I'm continually intrigued.
Reminder, is Cloudy the short one that kept hitting on Thunderlane and Lightning Dust's brown-colored kid?

Thanks. It occured to me a lot of character backstories here can be summed up with "My parents didn't love me enough......time to commit some crimes i guess"
This is Cloudy, she's be revamped:

Phoenix was found collapsed by the town bell tower, covered in ash and smelling of smoke. Ponies heard someone ringing the bell. Not hard to put two and two together.....the authorities were already suspicious. I imagine her parents were already angry she'd snuck out and gotten involved with a fire, but were probably also mostly relieved she was safe.....maybe even thinking she was the hero of the story, maybe she'd just happened to spot a wildfire and run off to wake the citizens. Maybe Dash and Bell ask if that's what happened, and Phoenix feels sick with guilt and immediately cracks, spilling the truth. "I started the fire." And Dash going "you did WHAT"

the "meh" badge slays me, but ouch wtf
I really like Nix, and she and Wave rider share a lot in common. Nix could really act as a guiding figure to her. Maybe Wave Rider gets into delinquency when she's a teenager, or at least has a mentality of a delinquent, and her fathers, unsure how to handle it for their own reasons, lash out at her. Especially Bruce, who cannot fathom why she's acting so crazy, and Stormy kind of dismisses it as teenage drama out of bottled up frustration toward his sister. The house is pretty tense overall.
Then Nix stops by to drop off some food or something and notices something's up, and she and Wave Rider could talk it out. Maybe Nix could divert her away from hurting her relationship with her family, and push her toward positive expressions of emotion. That way, Stormy and Nix could have a platform to reconnect, if it happened naturally that is.
idk I'm sure you already have a plan for these guys! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Ooooh I really love that idea! I can easily see Wave Rider having a rebellious phase, and Bruce freaking tf out, and Stormy reacting exactly the way you described. Love Phoenix getting to be a role model for once.
ahh, the "meh" badge. It's a participation prize. Did you ever get one of those? I never did (and I was a terrible athlete), and I didn't knew anybody that did growing up, but mom complains to this day about my generation being so soft because we all expected "participation trophies". Like, ma....wouldn't it have been your generation that were giving out the trophies in the first place? But even when I was teaching full-time, I never saw a real life participation prize. At a school award ceremony, my top-performing students got cool prizes, while the rest got zilch. I remember the kids being really sad about that, and I needed to give them a little pep talk to perk em up. I'm wondering if this oft-grumbled about participation award was ever a thing.
in any case Phoenix knows that badge is worthless

actually yes I got a "Meh" ribbon during a 5 grade marathon deal at the end of the school year. All the of schools in the town competed against each other.
As a very naive/sheltered child at first I thought it was hot shit, then later on I realized what it was.

oh my god I would enter my art into the State Fair every year as a kid and occasionally would receive a "that's phat!" award, which was less value than an honorable mention, which I would also get once in a while. I'm not sure if they gave those awards to all participants, but I hope not because getting one of those was like a condescending thumbs up lol

Awww. "phat", omg, i remember when people said that (or at least when advertisers thought kids said that). I see why they'd be given out- I think we should definitely encourage kids to participate in things without worrying about winning- but I also see how that'd feel condescending to get. I never heard back when I entered art into those elementary art contests, it was like tossing art into the void lol

Aww that's too bad. Getting something colorful to put on the wall is better than not hearing back. Contests like that should have a balance, but it would be really cool if they had an exhibition of children's uninhibited creative talent where there are no winners or losers. Competition is only as good as far as it positively pushes someone to be better. Otherwise it's just not fun.

I feel for Phoenix in that second panel. My mother is the same way with image and reputation.
Short hair- "Nana will throw a fit over it. no you can't dye it so close to graduation because she'll say shit about you like she did to me" (my mom dyed the underside of her hair purple.)
My appearance- "Stop wearing the same band shirts and jeans every day. dress up a little" or "Put on some makeup" It's not that i despise all makeup. some days i'm just feeling lazy or i'm bleeding.
My hair- "Its so greasy I can smell it" bonus points for the time this happened in a target. (luckily the problem was fixed when she found this little scalp scrubber thing. i have stubby baby nails and this things works like a dream."
oh and my personal favorite
"Your children will hate you forever" I will gladly give the first example...but the second one is a bit personal and tied to a belief i have.

Hm, what do you mean? Better like a better person, or a better flier? Because both are highly debatable. I'm nervous about people judging Dash too harshly. She's not a monster, she's just a brash person that made a few believable mistakes raising her kids. I'm not out to depict anybody as "the bad guy", just show events and consequences.

Do Stormy and Phoenix ever reconnect? I can imagine, in an odd reversal, that it's Phoenix who attempts to get Stormy to tone down during his "jerk jock" phase, because she's familiar with what happens if you let things go too far. But, I'm not sure where those events fall on the timeline, so maybe it's not realistically possible. Even if it takes them into their middle-age years, do they ever reconcile? And will Phoenix ever talk things out with Rainbow Dash, or is there too much damage done?
Also, I love this insight into Phoenix's character and adolescence. It definitely explains her current personality and relationship habits.

Thanks! I like the idea of Phoenix trying to contain Stormy's jerk jock phase.....or maybe her guilt over how she treated him factors into why she tries so hard to get him to see Chakra is rotten (doesn't work, Stormy just doubles down). Yes, I like to think they'll all reconcile someday. Somehow. Why, I even like to think someday I'll draw it. XD Stick around, we'll seeeeee
