Description
Download for full view: 3360x2100 (DA can't handle this size otherwise)A long time ago I started this project for exercising high polygon modeling. It then got stuck since the reference images did not show a lot of information so I could not continue. In the mean time I found better images and somebody gave me a PDF scan of the manual of the construction kit this guy is based upon. Using this information I could then continue (to a certain degree).
Body area got more work done. I'm a bit stuck on what to do with the rectangular area above the ass as this is where in the kit manual the on-off switch is located. I doubt though a real Zoid would have an on-off switch mounted up is ass so right now this area is more or less a hole I have no idea how to fill (ideas are welcome). Otherwise I'm a bit fighting with the connection to the head. The kit manual does give some poor views on this area so I'm guessing myself from one end to the other but it should get somewhere hopefully. Astonishingly the kit manual is somewhat different than the reference images I found so far. Looks like there are variations out of this guy which doesn't make it easy to find matching infos :/
Besides this I also whacked the cockpit around a bit. I didn't like the look to it in some places so I modified things a bit. I used my reworked game actor (not related to this model) as a pilot reference. The seat moved closer to the dashboard so the arms have more space to move. The seat also is narrower than before which should be more comfortable to sit it. For tihs the pedals at the feet moved closer together too. Now the pilot is no more sitting in there like a *peep* with spread legs
So all in all still some empty space to fill. I think I could try once a bit of material textures there. That said, are these things made fully out of metal or also other materials? The reference images I have contain exactly no information about the material so maybe somebody else has an idea. I could go with some more car-esque materials there but I'm not sure if this would fit
Made 4 renders and put them all in one huge image for the sake of fewer deviations. The individual images can be found here: top left , top right , bottom left , bottom right
For older images, videos and animations see the Fun Projos Galler< .

Definitely sounds like a plan... and it's easy to model . I'll stash that one away for later. Thanks.

Lol eh, not bad, but there's always room for MOAR! Lol (especially if you got a Mac, those things are beast with 3D)

woh that is extremely good rendering. XD I attempted this with a zaber fang on z brush and failed XD

LordOfDragons In reply to ThoronWild [2011-03-07 17:17:15 +0000 UTC]
Not astonishing. zBrush is not made for rendering but sculpting. For that you always have to import it into a 3D app like Blender and company as they have the needed rendering stuff.

oh yeh XD, I tryed it on scuptix too but yeh I guess you need to use a model.

LordOfDragons In reply to ThoronWild [2011-03-07 18:04:06 +0000 UTC]
What you mean? Sculptris is the same as zBrush (as the company bought it) in that it is about sculpting but does not have much rendering stuff going on. Best is to export the final mesh into OBJ and then import it into Blender or alike. That said sculpting is for organic models. It is not suited for mechanical models. For that one better uses a conventional application like Blender using SubSurf or other tools. This one here is for example only done using SubSurf without any sculpting involved.

Nice work ^^ I like the curved canopy, but the feet are a tad elongated.

LordOfDragons In reply to GhostLiger [2011-03-07 17:18:23 +0000 UTC]
In what sense elongated? I modeled them after a nearly side view image of a kit model I found on the Internet so the length should be matching that toy. No idea though if in the actual show the length is different. Never seen one so I can't compare.

The silver part looks too long. I think they either need to be shortened, or the blue foot part needs to be enlarged a bit.
Here's a proper side view image of the Shield Liger Kit . Compared to the photo the feet look flat and long, most notably on its front left.
It could also just be that the foot needs to be wider

I think the perspective in the rendering is fooling a bit. I made a quick comparison between the two ( [link] ) and I think the shape is rather similar minus the perspective. What might though trigger this too is the length of the individual toes. I noticed the kit model has a slight curve shaped by the different length of the toes. On my model though all toes are of the same length. Besides there seems to be a ridge underneath I didn't notice so far. Should be all doable though. I'll hang on to that picture if you don't mind.

The Liger in the photo. It's a custom and reminded my friends of the Blade Liger Forest and Night Fight version, so he got named Shield Liger Forest and Night Fight.

Zoids 2 was a line of chromed Zoids released in the UK back in 94. Shield Liger was included in this line released under the name Claw. [link]

That's interesting. Somebody gave me a PDF scan of the manual of a liger construction kit and it is named "Zoids 2 Claw". I didn't know what to make out of this but now I get it. So I used as reference for my model images from the original and this claw one here. I had the impression the models are slightly different in shape. Guess more changed than just some chrome parts I guess.

GhostLiger In reply to LordOfDragons [2011-03-09 22:40:34 +0000 UTC]
I'm pretty sure they used the same mould. There's some degradation in detail of later models due to the amount of use it's had, but it should be approximately the same size and shape. I will compare mine when I get home though.
As far as the manuals go I don't believe the pictures are done to scale, so the dimensions would be off compared to the kits.

LordOfDragons In reply to GhostLiger [2011-03-09 23:29:20 +0000 UTC]
Very well possible. It's more or less the only detail images I have as the other reference images of actual toys in action are not of the right angle to tell the details. But it eventually worked out. Just missing some last details on the body top side I have no clue about but otherwise I managed to somehow replicate the details I could see. Hopefully I'm done with the mesh soon. It has been one of the first model projects I started and the last one still not finished
