Description ONLY READ if you are a DC geek or have a fondness for the Zoo Crew.  Otherwise, it'll bore you to death!

The Zoo Crew is a group of anthropomorphic super heroes living on Earth-C in the DC Universe.  In their history they had interactions with heroes from Earth 1.  Including Superman, Changeling, Starro...

They had their own title, a fantastic book.  Created by Roy Thomas and Scott Shaw!

Leading up to Final Crisis and during it, we were treated to their re-instertion into the DCU proper.  They were given a new mini by Bill Morrison and Scott.  They were changed into "real" animals and brought onto Earth 1.

Then poof.  DC lost sight of them and they were never seen from again.  Besides being re-introduced in the New 52, lacking their original charm and turned into grim and gritty space faring animal folk.  I am glad they at least tried (thanks Giffen!), but DC just seems to have no room for them.

In an interview with Scott Shaw!, we found out what COULD have happened if he had been paid the proper respect and given the reigns to what could ultimately be a huge money maker for DC.

HERE:  www.aintitcool.com/node/51575
(He also revealed we almost got DC Direct figures!!  WAUGH!!)

So here are a couple of scenes that we could have seen happen if DC didn't have it's own collective head up its ass.

I'm someone who loves  cartoon animal characters, superheroes included, but I think the reason that DC doesn't want to bring back the Zoo Crew is because one, cartoon animal superheroes are out of style in the 2000's, and two, DC only wants "dark and gritty" stuff for the New 52, with the Zoo Crew being "too silly"

They could work as an animated cartoon series (albeit as a parody of superhero shows or such), but in the comic book world they would be found as being a dated concept, though I do know that the concept of more "realistic" animal superheroes does exist, they're few and rare, but they're out there.

I think you are exactly right, however I would say it doesn't necessarily mean that DC is.  As far as them being outdated, for comics that's true, but no one seems to be trying it.  I mean Cartoon Network, Disney and others put their toons into comics, DC might as well give it a shot.  They never market it right.  It could be written cleverly enough for adult fans who will pick it up because they're fans, but the money would be made if they marketed it to kids, toys an all.    I appreciate your comment!

I looked up the zoo crew on dc wiki I may be 21 years old but I do like the old classic dc comics before they went overkill but I like the new 52 it is their way of staring a new universe

It would have been interesting if the characters had been allowed to continue in Threshold.

I am working on a comic book/Tv show  idea called teen titans league so I might add the zoo crew in the story as a tv show or comic book the titans read

Oh man, I know.  Did you hit the "Watchmen replaced Zoo Crew figures" part?!  ARGH!

I just can't wrap my head around DC's "reboot everything" mentality, leaving NO room for the fun and humor that's come before.  Except the dollar signs in their eyes as the attempt to streamline into a DC TV/Cinematic world.

celamowari [2014-01-27 02:39:57 +0000 UTC]

The ending of that mini-series made me sad.  DC's attempts to revive the Zoo Crew and Ambush Bug really were "You Can't Go Home Again" moments.

Lordwormm In reply to celamowari [2014-01-28 04:47:00 +0000 UTC]

That could not have been said any more clearly.  I was really hoping DC was going to leave the universe as is after Final Crisis and the NEW52 might be some "Ultimate" line.  That I could have lived with.  Another "Elseworld", after all that seemed to be the entire purpose for reopening the multiverse.  gRr.

DC had it's own collective head up it's ass? No wonder why the heroes stopped wearing underwear outside of their costumes... hey what is "the underwear" part of the costume called anyway?

I know the MAD episode 100 sketch "MAD of Steel" touched upon the subject on Superman not wearing underwear anymore... and Superman was voiced by Weird Al himself.

Cephalopods are usualy villains or monstes in fiction. It's unfair that it's usualy only mammals that get the hero roles. But squids can be heroes too, just because they have no spine doesn't mean they are spineless.

I do, I do.  Even if DC went the Animated Series route I think the Zoo Crew could be so popular.  Though, I am glad they aren't.  Leaves more room for my Domestic-6 Universe!

Thank you very much!  I love them and know them inside and out about the same.  Though DC certainly had a lot more original animal heroes.  Not counting the Spider-Ham universe characters.
