Entry for 's contest.

Task: coming up with a new Alolan form for an official Pokémon.

Since all of the existing Alolan forms are of Pokémon from gen 1, I decided to do something for gen 2, which I think has a lot of interesting ones in it, and give it a tribute.

I sketched many Pokémon and had many ideas, and I'm willing to finish some designs and post them here too, but for now I just chose one for the contest, the one I think looks more original and convincing. So, as you can see, I went with Donphan.

Donphan are not very popular Pokémon, so I decided to give them the spotlight. Actually, I think it's a very cool Pokémon.

Giving you some infos and an "official" description.

Alolan Donphan

Type: Normal/Flying

Ability: Aerilate

"Donphan and Phanpy were brought along with other Pokémon by men from Johto to Alola with the intention of varying the fauna and flora of the islands and to try to balance the habitat that the Kanto imported Pokémon had subverted.

Donphan in particular had a hard time getting used to the new habitat and thus had to shift into a new Form. Being used to live in prairies in which they could roll without worrying of encountering any obstacles, they had a very difficult time adapting to the Alolan island in which they were left, with a really high volcano and many little ripid terrains. It was hard and energy-consuming to roll all the way up the volcano to look for food, and the descending phase wasn't a piece of cake either, since they used to roll at high speed and often smash against some boulders or trees and get hurt.

So they started experimenting new techniques - they tried to use their ears while rolling down to be less aerodynamic, spreading them as much as they could to tame the wind. Eventually, the Donphan with larger ears managed to bring food to their babies more successfully and with less time than the others, granting them survival.

The Alolan Donphan you can see now has grown their ears so big that they became able to fly up and down the mountains instead of curling up and rolling. So, if you ever venture to Alola, expect to find a Donphan flying above your head, if you can spot it in the blue sky."

That's it!

As you can see, I went with the Dumbo reference and made a flying elephant.

The ears-wings of course are bigger than the normal Donphan, and the colors are paler; I thought that a light-blue palette could fit it more, so it could be more similiar to Phanpy's and could also be explained with the fact that Alolan Donphan need to blend with the color of the sky to go unnoticed by Trainers and other wild Pokémon.

The design has also a more evident "roundness" to it, the lines and their tusks are smoother and with less angles because they have to be more aerodynamic.

I made a few other Alolan forms of other Pokémon, maybe I will post them in the future. Tell me if you'd be interested in seeing them!
