Description

EDIT: see the contest's results here: miztersiah.deviantart.com/jour…

So, here's my entry for MizterSiah 's contest's second round!

This time, the task was to create two rival Pokémon (such as Zangoose and Seviper) basing them off of two real world eras. I randomly got the Ancient Egypt, and then I freely chose the Roman Empire as the rival civilisation.

First of all, let me tell you why I chose the Romans as opponents: as I think most of you already know, Egyptians and Romans were two civilisations that got in contact a few times in History. They fought wars and then Egypt eventually became one of the many colonies of the Roman Empire.

Also, many of the great people of the time got in contact with each other, both rivalrous and intimate. A famous example of this are Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and Pharaoh Cleopatra, who fought eachother and then also got in a love affair.

So I decided to get inspiration from that.

Now, let's talk about the 'mons!

The pretty cat looking one is Sphynxis and it's a Psychic type Pokémon. Its name is the combination of the words "Sphynx" (referring to both the Sphynx Cat breed and the ancient Sphynx, mythological and magical creatures) and the name "Isis" (an Egyptian goddess that was also worshipped by Romans, at some point; Isis had magical and healing powers, a characteristic I referenced in Sphynxis' abilities).

I chose a cat-like creature to represent Egypt because they were sacred animals to the Egyptians.

Also, I wanted to play on the cat vs dog rivalry. XP (thank goodness the other person that got Egypt and decided to play the cat/dog card chose the dog to symbolize the Egyptians, getting inspiration from Anubis XD)

So, the other Pokémon, Ferturion, is based on a dog/wolf and it's a Fighting type. Its name is the combination of the words "Feral" (meaning "wild"/"untamed" animal) and "Centurion" (the centurion is a Roman soldier).

I chose a dog-like creature to go with the rivalry theme, but I gave Ferturion the likes of a wolf too, simply because the symbol of Rome (still nowadays) is a wolf! The wolf plays a big part in the mythological history of Rome, because the two men who founded the city were Romulus and Remus, two twin brothers that had been abandoned by their mother but saved and fed by a female wolf.

Of course you can see the Centurion feel to it by the choice of colors (red overall) and the appearance too, like the red crest that evokes the likes of a Centurion's helmet and the shields on its arms that look like the soldiers' Scutum (shield).

I made them look alike in some aspects, like the ears' shape, the fact that they both stand on two legs, the markings next to their eyes and on their lower body too.

But how did Sphynxis and Ferturion become rivals, and why? Read below for the backstory!

             Solar Power (Hidden Ability)

             Pure Power (Hidden Ability)

STORY TIME!

There once were two kingdoms who lived at peace. They had fought eachother for years, but eventually the two kings of the kingdoms estabilished a pact of non-violent relationships between the people.

So it wasn't strange for the people of the two kingdoms to get in close contact or to become friends. It happened to two young ones, a Boy and a Girl, to become great friends. She was the favourite servant of the Queen of the kingdom of the Moon, while the Boy was the son of a warrior of the kingdom of the Sun. They had met on a battlefield, in which the Boy's loyal Pokémon, Ferturion, had won a series of competitions, celebrated in honor of the Queen of the Moon. The queen decided to give the boy one last challenge, making him battle against her favourite and strongest servant. So the Girl battled against him with her Pokémon Sphynxis. Even though she had a type advantage, Ferturion was so strong he defeated Sphynxis with almost only one hit.

The Girl and the Queen were very impressed by the Boy and his Pokémon, so they invited him to live with them in their castle. The Boy gladly accepted.

So the Boy and the Girl lived in close contact for years, until they eventually fell in love.

They seemed to live happily ever after, until one day the King of the Moon was killed. On the scene of the crime, a red hair tuft was found, and everyone thought it could only belong to the Boy's Ferturion, the only Pokémon of that species that lived in the castle. Of course nor the Pokémon nor the trainer had anything to do with the murder, but he had been framed.

Angered at him, the Queen wanted to avenge her husband, so she sent all her servants and their Pokémon to hunt him down. The Girl was forced to fight him too, otherwise her Sphynxis would have paid her disloyalty.

So a group of Sphynxis was sent on a hunt, and the Boy returned to his previous home to ask the other warriors to side with him, along with their Ferturion. They accepted and fought the Sphynxis back.

Eventually, the fight burst into a greater conflict and then a new war that lasted for months. But the Boy and the Girl both died in that first fight. Saddened by the death of their trainers, Sphynxis and Ferturion swore to defend the other companions at any cost, with all their strength, until the end. So they became the chiefs of their respective Pokémon factions, commanding the estabilished guerrilla warfare.

Since that day, every time a Sphynxis and a Ferturion cross their paths, they fight in honour of that ancient hatred, seeking for revenge.

To this day, the identity of the King's true murderer it's still unknown.

Amazing story Lorenzo! Your descriptions are truly fantastic, the designs are great as well, simple but very powerful looking. Ooof your entry is amazingly done while I am here panicking cuz I think I won't finish in time. Very well thought out .... Personally I would choose Sphynxis, I like the majestic, boss, flexible kinda design on pokemans. Very nice addition to your set of pokemon. The chosen colors are also well thought out, they go very well together.
