Description
It seemed only the right thing to do, to take that egg she'd found to the Nook. She tucked it and the blanket into the basket, swaddling it gently so it wouldn't be jostled too severely, then she was on her way. Alma would know what to do, of course.Unfortunately for Tabbris, it seemed like today was the busiest time of the day in town, and as she squeezed her way through a crowd near the market district, she wondered if would have been easier to take the long way around town. She'd reasoned that the straight cut through town would be much faster, but she could see now that she was wrong.
The time it was taking wasn't what really bothered her most, though. It was - well - she couldn't quite put her finger on it until something peculiar happened.
"Malby, come on, move out of the way for her. Can't you see she's with egg?" A dark red wyngro pulled a wyngling out of the way, the same shade as her and clearly her son. "We don't want to make her trip and drop it."
Tabbris nodded and smiled as a show of thanks to the little wyngling, whose front legs were noticably larger than his back ones - even showing a resemblance to his mother in that way. The experience felt odd for a moment, until she realized what had been said, and she turned to correct the mother. Unfortunately, they were already gone, and she couldn't tell them that, no, while she had an egg with her, she wasn't... with egg.
From then on, her walk to the Nook was more awkward than she cared for it to be. She distracted herself by counting the flowers in windowsills - almost all wilting - and the number of cobblestones on the street. Still, she wasn't distracted enough to miss the strange glances people gave her, however much she wished she didn't notice. Was this how other wyngrew felt when giving up their children? Even though most of the looks were merely curious, no one really judging her for her assumed choice, Tabbris couldn't help but feel a sense of... guilt, almost. Shame, even?
It must have looked a lot like she was taking her egg to abandon it at the Nook. Was this why so many did this in the darker hours, to avoid being seen, the looks and stares?
Of course, it was silly to think that way. She'd had conversations with others before and knew that most wouldn't judge someone either way, whether they gave up an egg or kept it. It just wasn't something most wyngrew seemed to care about, and normally Tabbris wouldn't either.
What was with her today?
She shook away the thoughts, forcing a smile on her face as she entered the Nook. By the time she managed to get through the crowd, it was getting dark. "Alma, I have an egg for you," she called, knowing that the Nook's caretaker would likely hear her with her wind-enhanced ears.
Sure enough, only moments later Alma was hopping towards her down the hallway, a startled look on her face. "What? An egg? Tabbris, I didn't think you were even old enough for that, and you haven't been showing signs - it's not yours. Tabbris, where did you find this egg?"
Concern turned to a stern expression as she stared Tabbris down. Tabbris averted her eyes, looking at the egg in the basket instead. Then she began to tell Alma where she was - that she had found a home that she was fixing up, and that she would be moving out soon, and that she was putting finishing touches on it so that's where she was. Then she told Alma about the sounds she'd heard in the bushes and turning around to discover a vanishing figure the color of bronze, along with the basket she now held. By the time she poured out all of the words and stammers she could manage, night had fallen entirely, and some of the other helpers went around to light the candles around the Nook.
"I see," Alma murmured, nodding slowly. "Don't look so nervous - you're not in any trouble," she added to Tabbris with a smile. "I'm glad you brought it here. Let's take it to the hatchery. I'm a bit full at the moment, so you'll have to come with me." She patted the egg in her pouch gently, then led the way down the hall, to the part of the Nook where the eggs were held and kept warm.
Reluctantly, Tabbris passed off the basket when Alma held out her hand. It felt like something was pulling her to the egg - telling her not to let go - that there was a reason for her being the one to find it.
Then Alma took the basket inside the nursery, whisking it away, and the feeling faded.
But not entirely.
