Description Narga had never seen a spite before. It made sense. Even though he lived in the woods, he still lived very near town, where the reach of the nova tree was still in effect. Its protection blanketed the forest in which he lived, though he didn't know it until one day, he asked his new friend, Tranquility, about it.

"I climb trees sometimes... and I see a... a thing," he said, standing up on his hind legs to indicate something tall, reaching his claws above his head for good measure, "and it's bigger-er than aaaalll the houses, almost. It's all... pretty and shiny and... color-y. What is that?"

Tranquility gave him one of her kind, patient smiles as she explained, "It's a nova tree. I would take you to go see it, but I know you don't like town yet. It's.... well, it's in the very center of town. It helps keep us safe from stuff like spites, who are driven away by the positive magic the nova tree generates! Does that make sense?"

"... Kinda," he admitted sheepishly, shrugging. Then he asked quickly, "What's a spite?"

"I have this pamphlet from the sheriff inside," Tranquility laughed, nodding towards her house. "Wait a moment and I'll go get it to show you. Y'know, living so close to town but in a forest, I'm not surprised you haven't really heard of them."

Narga waited patiently for her to come back. That day, he learned all about spites - yittles, weepers, kindrins, he read through the whole pamphlet. Or, rather, Tranquility read it for him while he followed along and looked at the pictures. He committed what she told him to memory before wandering back to his tree for the night, thanking Tranquility for the information and ready to just give it time to soak in.

He didn't think he'd ever need the information, but as winter set in, he grew more and more hungry. He had to broaden his foraging and hunting area while avoiding the other ferals in the area. He knew he could ask Tranquility for help, but he didn't want to just depend on her and not be able to fend for himself in the wild anymore when spring came. He set out farther and farther each time, until, unbeknownst to him, he began wandering on the edges of the nova tree's influence, where the most desperate spites roamed.

The first time he came upon a spite, it was a yittle. It whispered words to him, but they had no meaning, because he could not understand what it said. It looked tired, if a spite could look tired. Hungry might've been a better word.

Narga did the only thing that he could think to do. He lashed out, intent on killing the creature. First he bit down on thin air as it drew back its spindly arm.  Then he reared up on his hind legs, drawing his own arm back, but when his claws lashed forward the yittle danced back, baring its teeth in its ghoulish grin. Narga wasn't fast enough. Why wasn't he fast enough? He lunged for it again, and again, and again. Eventually, he had a couple of nicks on his shoulder, but the yittle had long slashes across its face and a missing finger. It was considerably worse for wear by the end of it.

The yittle chittered some more words he didn't understand, sounding agitated, then it scuttled off. The thing, made brave by hunger, had decided that Narga wouldn't be worth the hassle as prey. Narga watched it leave, breathing heavily, before finally shaking his head and bounding back towards town. Tranquility surely wouldn't mind sparing a fruit or two so he wouldn't go hungry for today. He could bear to ask for a favor this once.
