Description
PreviousThere was more than one reason that Fern had stashed his bag in the barn. No one to ask questions about why he kept packing things away throughout the last week and a half, for one, but the biggest reason was, honestly, Stream.
She and the other work-ori were sleeping when Fern walked in, but when he began to rummage through the nearby haystack for his bag, she woke up with a soft snort, shaking her head drowsily. He was prepared when she approached him and nuzzled his shoulder inquisitively. None of them were used to gros coming in this late at night, so of course she was curious about why he was here, but she also gave a happy little muttering noise that made Fern smile.
"Hey girl," he greeted softly, standing up with his bag slung over his shoulder. He adjusted it around his new (and rather troublesome, if he were honest) wings while Stream took the time to sniff at him. "No treats now, sorry. I'm in a hurry tonight." He glanced outside, but he couldn't tell the time that well when there was no moon visible. The stars themselves still shone brightly though, meaning that he should probably get moving so he would be out of sight of the house as soon as possible in case someone woke up. "Look, girl. I have to go," he told Stream, patting her cheek. "Thanks for being there for me when times got tough."
He stood on his toes to give her a boop on her forehead, her neck bowed to be closer to him. He smiled wistfully as he let her go, turning towards the door, but she bolted in front of him, suddenly playful. Her tail wagged as she hopped from foot to foot, making Fern's smile turn a little more tired than before.
"... Not tonight, Stream," he said quietly. He patted her chest, then wrapped his arms around her neck. "I have to go to work. I'll be gone for a long, long time, but you have to stay here. You're the family's work-ori, they need you."
And, believe him, he'd thought about taking Stream with him, but ori weren't cheap. The farm would have to dig into savings to procure a replacement for Stream, and it would probably be a gelding that would require some training at that. With harvest season so close too, well - Fern was angry, but not cruel. Not to mention that if he took Stream, well, most ori were unique creatures, and Fern would definitely be recognized if he was with her. He was hoping for a metamorphosis soon, like many young adults his age got, that would make him unrecognizable on his own, but Stream wouldn't get that. So he couldn't take her. Not by any means. This was goodbye.
He found himself shivering a little, trying unsuccessfully to hold back a fountain of tears. He let go of Stream slowly, a shuddering sigh escaping him. "Be good, Stream."
She let out a noise like a whine when he let go, trying to follow him, but when he made the motion she was trained to recognize, she did as told and stopped in her tracks. That didn't keep her from letting out pitiful sounds, the other two ori in the barn getting restless at her cries.
Fern didn't allow himself another glimpse back as he shut the barn door behind him. Funny, how an ori was the only real thing he could see himself missing.
As some say, though, when one door closes, another opens. He closed the barn door, closed the door on his old life, and now he would hopefully find a new, better future waiting ahead of him. With that determined thought fixed in his mind, he made his way across the fields and towards his new life.
