Description
Sometime around 2003 or so, I was asked by a writer if I'd like to draw the CAPTAIN SCARLET comic book. Not familiar with Captain Scarlet? Let's see if I can fill you in on some things....Captain Scarlet is perhaps better known in Britain than in the States--it was one of Gerry Anderson's Super-Marionette tv shows in the '60s (along with THUNDERBIRDS and several others). I discovered CAPTAIN SCARLET on Saturday mornings in the early '90s, when it was being broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel. The marionettes were far more realistically sculpted than those of other Anderson shows like STINGRAY and THUNDERBIRDS, and the show was considerably more violent. Ie: I loved it. heh. Captain Scarlet fights agains the diabolical Mysterons, who are in from the planet Mars. Thru a freak accident, Captain Scarlet becomes completely indestructible. He can't be killed by normal means--a handy power to have when fighting the nasty Mysterons, who kill their human victims and take over their bodies.
Anyway, the deal sort of fail thru. The main honcho incharge wasn't sure I was right to draw the heroic exploits of the good Captain (even though the writer was convinced I was absolutely perfect for the job). Apparently, my work wasn't "edgy" enough, though he could never clarify what he meant by the term. Oh well, this piece of artwork did get drawn by me, and allowed me one evening drawing Britain's '60s tv sensation. Better than nothing, I suppose.

Appropriately enough, I find this reminiscent of the work of Ron Turner and Richard Jennings, illustrators on the Anderson comic TV21.

I think it's great, especially the way you captured Captain Black. A shame it never became the comic it was supposed to be. Did you ever get to see some scripts?

Regarding the whole "not edgy enough" issue, perhaps what he meant to say is that your current drawing style is just kind of, well, bland really, like an every day animation style, kind of boring, not very interesting to look at or particularly stylish. A lot of your stuff right now mostly looks kind of like Bruce Timm but less stylized and devoid of any of the same charm.

So my drawing style is "bland", eh? Wow. Meg-ouch. I'm not sure why you're throwing around the negativity, calling my work "bland" and "lacks charm", etc. You're entitled to your opinion I guess, but I'm not sure you reply is overly kind or helpful.
Nah, I don't think that's what he meant, dude. They were looking for a more realistic style like the Silver Age stuff, but the guy didn't know what he wanted. In the end, they didn't even produce a book, wasting thousands of dollars in licensing fees. The guy just had an articulation problem.

Yeah -- I think he never clarified "edgy" because he wasn't sure what that meant. Heartbreaking to see you so close, bud, but given time ... it's gonna happen. Can't keep a good man down, and you're among the best.

I don't think a Captain Scarlet comic ever did come out from that company. Seems a waste of money to get a decent license property and not use it. Oh well, that's how she crumbles sometimes.

And by "she", of course, you mean "the biscuit" -- not "the cookie." Being British and whatnot.
I think it's a shame to waste your abilities. Someone's gonna notice and pick you up soon, Big Guy. Gonna happen. And I'll say, "I knew him when ... he used to chat with me on my DA page!" And they'll say, "YOU have a DA page?? What a waste of storage space!"
