I did this commission for a gal in Malaysia who wanted me to create a special screensaver image for her friend's Birthday. The concept being:

On the balcony of a NYC penthouse, a female assassin who kills with deadly lipstick holds a large size Birthday cupcake. Behind the assassin, through the sliding doors of the balcony a dead girl lies victim on the floor in a Sleeping Beauty sort of repose. This to be drawn in the animated style of Batman The Animated Series. Image should be 1920 X 1200 pixels to fit a 24" monitor.

The character designs and costumes were largely left up to me, but both girls had to have dark hair, and I received a reference image of what the cupcake was supposed to look like.

I pencilled out the layout, and inked the gals with a Raphael brush and Speedball Super Black India ink. I enjoyed experimenting a little. The mesh skirt part of her costume was created simply using cross-hatching techniques. The areas where the mesh overlaps over her briefs was done using Pelikan Graphic White applied with a brush to produce a nice old-school high contasting, gossamer effect. This was done on the actual art board, and is not a digital technique.

I did enjoy experimenting around with textures on this one. Normally I wouldn't add this many textures to a single piece of artwork, but since this was going to be a screensaver gift, I figured it'd be better to add in a little extra detail, since the style was somewhat simple. I added in the Hellenistic vase as a tip of the hat to the Circe commission I pencilled back in 2009, which also featured some Greek pottery.

It was a fun assignment, and the client and the recipient were both very happy with the results. In the end, that's what matters. Hope you enjoy it
