Description
Been really busy lately but I finally got a break and managed to get the base for two Repulsers cut out. It was a bit of an adventure, as about 2 cuts into the first one the blade on the bandsaw finally snapped, so I had to change to a jigsaw. It cut alot slower but I was able to get into the details with it.They are cut out of a .22 inch thick 24x48 peice of acrylic that I cut in half and laminated with superglue. They both weigh about a pound, a bit more than the wooden elucidator.
It's been an adventure so far, we shall see how the rest of it goes, let me know what you think.

That was the plan. Stuff turned out to be too brittle, need to get some better acrylic.

Hey I was wondering if I can use, well, most of your elucidator pictures to make my an iBook for my school project. I have this prop-making extracurricular activity about making props like you so I thought yours would be a good example. I'm publishing the book for free and I'll credit your pictures by pasting "Β©2012-2013Β loveshina " *on every picture possibly*.Β

No Problem, I'm thinking about finally doing that tutorial since I'm going to be making another Elucidator and a Lambent Light. Feel free to ask away, just keep an eye out for that stuff too.

Im not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the silver one he Elucidator? That's a silver metallic paint.

I made the templates for them. I might end up releasing the repulser one, but the elucidator was drawn by hand, so I'll have to redo that one digitally.

I'm actually using the same technique haha except the acrylic I have is tinted a green/blue color and transparent (also .25" each). I cut the two pieces with a CNC router. The issue I have is gluing the pieces together without it being so obvious that it's two sheets >_<

Ahh yeah, do you know a good clear coat for acrylic that would help make it abrasion-resistant? I'm worried about it getting scratched at conventions.
π: 0 β©: 1
loveshina In reply to xTsuki-chan [2013-02-02 19:31:34 +0000 UTC]
most acrylic is really tough, it comes down to cell cast vs extruded, but there's a massive price difference between those. For our use, extruded is more than enough, so far the acrylic has been the toughest material I've worked with, scratching shouldn't be a problem. As for gluing, I've had the best results just using a pretty ridiculous amount of super glue. You'll want a mostly dust free environment, some way to put light pressure over the whole of the pieces, and just flow a ton of some thin cyanoacrylate over it.

Your welcome, good luck with it. I haven't been able to get a glue joint without at least some air bubbles. It's too expensive a material to run that many tests on as well. And the cheapest place I've been able to find some 3/8" thick was from a manufacturer, a 4'x8' sheet for roughly 200$. I really wish this stuff was cheaper!

xTsuki-chan In reply to loveshina [2013-02-15 06:57:28 +0000 UTC]
I agree, the colored sheet I got was extremely expensive! I think I would actually cry if it cracked lol. I tried out some acrylic cement on a tiny piece, and there were too many air bubbles for it to work out. However, the super glue worked perfectly haha thanks for the tip!

loveshina In reply to xTsuki-chan [2013-02-15 07:06:13 +0000 UTC]
Glad it worked. The super glue flows out better than the cement and will fill. Super glue is amazing stuff, I use it for filling small flaws and dents all the time in my wooden props too.

Yeah, I'm really liking how tough it is, not easy to damage, but it is ALOT harder to work. Had to resort to a dremel for shaping.

In the light novel it is mentioned that the sword is slightly transparent, which I thought would be interesting. Its also supposed to be white, however I like the green from the anime, so I'm combining to two.

I can veritably say that perspex is lovely to work with. Gives a nice frosted appearance when sanding. Although best option is to lasercut them, my hats off to you for using a bandsaw though as it's prone to cracking that way.
π: 0 β©: 1
loveshina In reply to Mr-Pendulum [2012-11-19 18:48:19 +0000 UTC]
Looked up perspex and can say that it is far out of my price range unfortunately. As for the bandsaw, the blade actually broke 2 cuts into it, so most of it was done with a jigsaw. I can say the reason it didn't crack was because of the thickness. Especially since this is extruded.

wow will you go all the way in the cosplay?? I would like to see a full nitoryu (dual blade) Kirito cosplay.
I'm trying to make elucidator too, and I want to ask you: what's the thickness of the blade and the handle??
If you can answer me just that i'll be happy
Keep the good work!

I'm making it just under a half inch thick, the handle is one inch in diameter. And I plan on going all the way with the cosplay. I have a couple ideas on how to accurately have both swords on my back and be able to draw and sheath them on my own.
π: 0 β©: 1
menteausente In reply to loveshina [2012-11-09 05:57:17 +0000 UTC]
thanks for the answer.
I know a good way to create hard and light sheaths:
1: Copy the shape of the blade in foam or soft wood to create a template (not the outline but in 3D)
2: Draw the outline in a piece of thin polyester cloth and add some fringe to the shape.
3: Cut this piece and another one with the same shape and sew them together except in the upper side.
4: The result is a bag with the shape of the blade.
5: Flip it over to hide the sewed union and put the template from step 1 inside covered with tape.
6: Use polyester resin or epoxy over the cloth and it will get a single rigid piece.
7: Pull out the tape and the template, sand and paint.
You can also cut it in half and cover the inside with soft cloth to avoid scratches in the real blade and glue it together again using the same resin.

That's an interesting idea, could just use fiberglass resin and cloth for it. Might give that a shot, one layer of fiber matt should do the trick, thanks for the idea.

That's amazing So is each one .22 inches or .44 inches? Just curious XD kinda confused
π: 0 β©: 1
loveshina In reply to WarpedOrb [2012-11-04 21:47:36 +0000 UTC]
They're .44 inches thick. I used a piece of .22 and doubled it up before I cut these out. Unfortunately the gluing didn't go as well as i had thought, so I'm probably going to have to scrap these and get a 1/2 inch thick piece from Grainger. I can get a big enough piece for four of these, so if I have enough people want one I can do that, because I can't get a 140$ piece of plastic to make one sword for myself.

A question. Did you hand paint or Elucidator or spray paint?
I like making swords myself, but one thing I do have trouble with is having clean lines on my props.
Seeing as how your Elucidator's edge lines seem perfect, I'm rather curious as to how you did it.
