Description
A few weeks ago, i uplodaded a drawing of a plane i designed, the F-45P. I decided i wasn't quite done with the project and dived in further to explore ideas about making a plane work on Pandora.
This is the pilots and their ground mechanic, Jackson Eld (A friend's charater), Guntram Messerschmitt (An OC i adapted from elsewhere), and Martin Zephus (A new OC for this whole thing). I went for the ref-sheet style so i could include several things about them that i felt would be important later on.
First things first, i looked into the flight helmet. We see multiple times that RDA pilots on Pandora are operating without Exopacks on. It makes sense that the cockpits are sealed and have an earth-like atmosphere, while also being pressurized to slight overpressure to keep Pandoran Air out. We also see that most personal have a mask within reach when inside the cockpit.
The issue here is that a fighter jet is a lot more restrictive in the movement of the pilot due to the Gs and having to be strapped into an ejection seat. Said seat is also a risk as shooting out on Pandora will be a death sentence without a a way to put the mask on before ejection, or having the mask on constantly. I picked the latter.
The pilot helmets are inspired by high altitude flight helmets from the 1950s, such as the US K-1 helmet. It is less bulky than its realworld counterpart, and it is basically a helmet that combines the headset and mask into one package while also give a tiny bit of padding for the pilot's head.
The HUD visor is placed outside the helmet and pulled down manually. Outside of combat it gets covered up to avoid dust accumulating on it.
The Exopack is only part of the issue. It also comes with an O2 tank and filter. Normally, pilots plug into a plane-mounted air supply, however, in this case, i still had to consider what should happen in case of ejection. I did the same as in real life and equipped the pilots with a survival vest. It comes with an O2 tank and a filter in 2 pouches that the pilot connects to that works just like a normal exopack. To reduce the size of the package, it was split into two seperature parts.
Apart from that though, the pilots are equipped as normal. Underlying flight suit, flight jacket, and G-suit.
For the mechanic, there's not to much to discuss. He is a normal worker so he doesn't get a lot of incredible tech, nor does he really need it. Overalls, gloves, and a tool belt is what the doctor ordered.
In terms of colors, i gave Jackson a color scheme specified by his creator with a red primary, orange secondary, and black tertiary color. Martin runs a grey primary, with blue secondary, and shared the black tertiary color. I also picked some things, like their O2 tanks that remain green because they are standard issue and don't adhere to color schemes. Guntram, being a character i used before, is equipped as before. So he has his penguin plush "Pingu", his helmet, blue overalls and a white shirt, grey work gloves, and steel-capped boots.
I also added the connecting tubes from pilot helmet to the survival vest on Martin to see how that might work out.
At the bottom, i went ahead and drew their helmets with proper decorations on them. From my friend, i was told Jackson's Spirit animal is a dragon, so i styled it to look like a dragon's head. Martin is more of a knight, so i styled it to have the look of a knight's helmet and added to lightning bolts to break the monotone color scheme. Guntram doesn't have a helmet that was decorated, so i drew his plushie holding a wrench and looking to the sky.
Finally, each of them got their nickname. GUntram's is a name that i saw a friend of mine use to refer to him. I liked it and adopted it as his official nickname.
For Jackson and Martin, it's their call-sign. I decided to not just go for something that sounded cool, and instead went with the American tradition that their callsigns are tied to a story about a early screw-up on their part. Jackson's callsign, Scorch", is not only a Republic Commando reference, but was picked because he, according to his creator, has a habbit of causing fire-related accidents from time to time. Martin's is because of his tendency to pull a lot of high G moves, which, early in his carrier caused him to enter a G-LOC, which is when a pilot brielfly passes out from the Gs preventing blood from reaching the brain.
