I wonder if you can combine the two designs... a ring holding round cargo modules, and a spine for holding larger cargo modules, with separated crew and stateroom and engineering sections. Could be valuable for a mercenary company to carry both their equipment and troops, or short-range cargo haulers, or scientific missions or colonial expeditions that need to put a lot of personnel and materiel down at once.
