Description A piece done during free time as a practice.

Base on the battle off Samar during World War II
when the destroyer USS Johnston lead the
counterattack against superior forces.

She just struck the Japanese Crusier IJN Kumano
with a torpedo that took off the bow of the ship,
before getting hit by the battleships Yamato and
Kongo.

She fought on with her captain issuing command from the rear bridge after the shells from Yamato wrecked the bridge

Major Edits
Major edits after some critcs, tried to make the scene more exciting and more details.

Increased the details on Johnston after getting quite a number of photo referances on the Fletcher class destroyers.

Throw in some of the Avenger Torpedos bombers (minus their torpedos) that also took part in the battle plus flaks in the sky. And the battleship Yamato in the far background.

It was a battle that Col. Travis, Davie Crockett, and 180 more would of been proud of. The crews and captains of Taffy 3 should be treated with same reverence as the men of the Alamo, for the foe that Taffy 3 faced that day was tantamount to the one that Santa Anna brought against the men of the Alamo. And yet unlike the men of the Alamo, the outcome for some of the ships of Taffy 3 was different, for the Japanese didn't press their advantage, but ran instead, thus ending the last major fleet action of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Makes no difference to me. That day, they all fought like battleships. And they both went down in glory befitting only gods among men. Ships that fought with the hardest of wills.

this is the reason there called Fighting Fletcher's. The crews and There ships Were at many times the Ones that stood in the way of the Japanese Hammer. and Troop transport and carriers from val dive bombers to Even The Yamato her self. To marines who had to attack the beach heads they were a god send as there 5 inch 38s guns 40mm Bofors and 20mm Oerlikon ripped Into the island defenses. and the soldiers Of Normandy landings These Small Tin Cans like the USS that Dueled with German Shore batteries sometimes at Point Blank range to save the from the slaughter of German bunkers. the War may been won by the carriers and Battleships. But the battles were won by the Destroyers in my mind

They kinda had to have the minds of guys who eat an expired mayo jar, glass and all, just because you bet them ten bucks. So yeah, they were a little bit nuts to have the balls to get so close that the Japanese couldn't get their guns low enough! The only thing they didn't do was ram them and try boarding the Japanese ships! (Which would have been awesome!)

I love the detail and thought you put into your pieces

The men on the deck - shouting and waving, the birds above disappearing placidly out of view watching the scene with idle interest...the detailing of the flag on the USS Johnston, the detail of the splashes of water around the bow.

I fav a lot of your work because it is all my favorite, though don't think i don't look critically at your art because of it I enjoy and love the depth in everything you create
