it will one day, Im hoping to create a short action scene involving tons of mech and scifi baddass goodness. My mate is gunna rig it once I do the uvs.

Would one of your ideas happen to involve a sandstorm with mechs charging each other with soldiers in power-armor follow by LTV's and Tanks?

Lucid-Grey In reply to SimsDoc [2012-03-21 05:34:11 +0000 UTC]

haha, yep pretty much nailed it!, the other idea was there is a small tactical force retrieving a relic from some giant underground cavern.

SimsDoc In reply to Lucid-Grey [2012-03-22 09:56:58 +0000 UTC]

Wouldn't the Cave idea be a excavation team instead of military units to be deployed?

Lucid-Grey In reply to SimsDoc [2012-03-22 10:01:50 +0000 UTC]

yeah.. perhaps.. but military is far more baddass. the idea in my head is probably different to how you see it.

What type of shader did yah use for this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lucid-Grey In reply to Webclaw [2012-03-13 08:53:56 +0000 UTC]

hey man, just the standard vray material for all materials. Its an "architectural" shader which means it can make pretty much anything!
from glass to metal to paper. The settings defines the material.
I find for optimum realism, you must have traced reflections turned on with a hdri map in the environment slot of your renderer "vray in this case" Although the render time will take a massive hit!

cheers

Webclaw In reply to Lucid-Grey [2012-03-14 07:04:07 +0000 UTC]

Sweet thanks man,
I'll have a check to see MentalRay has an equivalent in its shaders, been using plain old lamberts and blinns, although heavily customized to do most of my metal based renderings

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lucid-Grey In reply to Webclaw [2012-03-14 07:21:03 +0000 UTC]

yeah man, mentalray has mia material x, if your using maya it also has presets.
Not sure about max..probably does.
look for an hdri lighting tutorial for mentalray, Shaders are only as good as your lighting solutions.. that goes for everything actually!

Started using the mia materials and wow, a lot more flexible and useful than simple lamberts, blinns etc.
Thanks man

Wow... See, this is exactly the sort of thing that makes me want to become a 3D modeler, even if it's easier to get into the industry as a rigging specialist (though I'm having fun with rigging as well). This is awesome, sir. As a student in 3D animation, can I ask you a few questions about this one:
First - is this built out of NURBS or Polys? (I'm guessing polys, but one can never be sure) If polys, did you make any parts in NURBS first and then convert them?
Second - Is it still many different objects attached to a rig, or is it mostly just a single mesh now (aside from the parts that move separately from the body, like the autocannons and possibly the rifle)?
Third - Uhh... I think any more questions will really depend on how/if you answer my first two.
Again, this is awesome. I hope you can get Flyingdebris to draw the back so you can model that as well.

Lucid-Grey In reply to Master-Vega [2012-03-13 06:40:23 +0000 UTC]

hi,thanks for the kind words~!
I only just finished studying 2 years in 3d.
The robot is made from polys, although nurbs to poly workflow works well too!
As for the rig, This isn't rigged yet, manually posed it is.
My old tutor actually wants to rig it when Ive done the uvs, which is awesome!
but yeah, the model will still consist of many pieces, only small things will be combined "bolts" ect.
And yeah, flyingdebris did a quick sketch of the back and sent it to me, so the back so modeled too.
I'm uploading a demo reel of my work soon which will include a turntable and wires of the robot. Ill send you a link when ive got it up .. within 24 hours.

Master-Vega In reply to Lucid-Grey [2012-03-13 07:12:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I appreciate the prompt answers and look forward to seeing the reel!
You manually posed that? You've got a lot of patience, sir. I would have just made an alternate save with a simple skeleton rig, enough to pose it without a headache but definitely not animation ready.

I'm currently a ways ahead in my modelling course, and my prof. is an animation specialist, so I'm trying to get tips on 3D modelling wherever I can. Thanks again for replying.

Lucid-Grey In reply to Master-Vega [2012-03-13 08:10:28 +0000 UTC]

haha, well id say the method i use of posing is quicker then a quick rig.
did you see my other robot on deviantart? that one is rigged and animated by myself , which will be in the reel also

Master-Vega In reply to Lucid-Grey [2012-03-13 15:09:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I saw it earlier. It's a lot of fun, and I'll try and write down some thoughts on it once I'm done with school/work today. Already commented about it a little bit in your reel, though that was mostly about the animation.

Lucid-Grey In reply to Master-Vega [2012-03-13 16:04:07 +0000 UTC]

ah yip sweet, yeah the animation was alittle off, that was actually the oldest work on the reel. that was my first year project. i had 11 weeks to design, model, texture, rig, animate and render/composite the entire scene.. pretty intense really.

Master-Vega In reply to Lucid-Grey [2012-03-13 20:38:20 +0000 UTC]

I meant to ask, are you going to a trade school? I'm going to a very rounded university, and thus doubt I could find enough time to make that quality of animation/modelling from scratch in that number of weeks - while at the same time balancing it all with general education courses.

For being your oldest work, it's still excellent. You seem to be mostly oriented around modeling/compositing anyway, so a few small problems in your animated sequences aren't really a problem if they don't make the model look bad.

Lucid-Grey In reply to Master-Vega [2012-03-14 00:57:04 +0000 UTC]

im not sure what you mean by trade school? I went to a school where you get taught a bit of everything in the 3d pipeline.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Master-Vega In reply to Lucid-Grey [2012-03-14 05:26:24 +0000 UTC]

Trade school meaning the school teaches you a trade rather than broader (and honestly, redundant) education. What you're talking about sounds like one - which isn't at all a problem. You probably received a better education in your discipline than I will have by graduation.

I'd complain about normal universities, but that'd be completely off-topic. Let's focus on the awesome picture and animation reel you've got. xD
