Immersion, mostly. I like being able to have the choice to ask why I have to do all this hero shit

Actually it is a pretty good question.
You're the hero/villain, you got stuff to do and people are always bothering you with their own wants and needs. Why wouldn't you want to know if there's a good reason you should be doing it?

hahaha indeed, I think is for both to have the usual choices in RPG and to satisfy the player strange motives to go out of the script ( and possible dont make the story as its expected).
its a useless waste of time and effort indeed.
( also nice bunnie picture dis time, I love her underboobs display and great annoyed expression
).

I like the ones that has a witty answer "Well, there's no one else available, you'll have to make do".

Or something like this: "Nobody is stupid enough... but you"
I wish that would happen at least once

"Because you're the one who was in this prison cell on this particular day" is pretty much how Morrowind and Oblivion start.

LikeΒ Demialc-neeb-sah-em Β said, it's about illusion of choice. Some people, myself included, like to immerse ourselves fully into that illusion and ride it to its natural conclusion: YOU may know what's going on, but your character may not. Personally I like to maintain the suspension of disbelief. Why does my character ask why? Maybe he's not big on killing. Maybe he's trying to find justification for killing. Maybe he's just lazy and stalling for time. Could be lots of things.
I like that they give you more than just Y/N for options, even if it's an illusion. Because games, like any fiction, are illusory. I think pushing a game's capabilities for storytelling is a good thing, even if it's just adding a third option to dialogue.
I hope you feel better, Demien. Get lots of rest and stay hydrated!

You see this "why me?" question almost always about hero's present, not his/her past. So answer almost never adds something to the story.
When all conditions of quest already were named there is no need to flirt and ask "so... why me?"
I *almost* better. Thank you

Thankfully I haven't played many games like this. And get well soon man. Don't let the sickness sour your spirits.

It's to give the illusion of choice.
..Note the term, "ILLUSION." It's the critical word there.
(Also it could give you some exposition. Like, "It's you because you can eat the souls of your enemies so they don't respawn. ")

Can you recall any moment than Shepard asked "why me?" ?
I can't...
So probably not.

What about redundant, or circular choices? I know of an old rpg, maybe it was dragon quest 3-4? well it gave you three choices, but no matter what you chose, it kept bringing you back to three choices to take a character with you NO MATTER WHAT. I saw an article called "but thou must" about it.

Even lots of moder games, which have more than 3-4 choices, still have that "why me?" sin.
>>"but thou must"
Oh, this is subject for different rich story
"Choice without choice"
