Description More than one person has asked me to make a tutorial on how to shade, and I get plenty of compliments on my shading, so I figured I had some wisdom to share with the world! I hope this helps some people out, it was really fun to make!

As expected of a tutorial, remember that this is only my PERSONAL opinion on what looks good to me, and it's also a stylized way of doing things (it's not photorealistic rendering). So take it all with a grain of salt and feel free to correct any mistakes you think I may have made! <3

Also, maybe I will make a follow-up tutorial on shading dragons and scales. They act differently since they're so shiny, and can be pain to shade haha...

Oh my gosh- I've never tried erasing light onto the shadow- or, whatever you call step 1?? I'm definitely trying that next time aa!!

I really like this tutorial. Another tip is using black but changing the opacity until it's just right. I'm not an expert artist, but that's what I like to do! Thank you very much for sharing your tutorial with all of us!

Shading with black at any opacity makes the colours muddy and washed out! In real life, shadows are tinted the opposite colour of the light source casting them. There are no pure blacks or greys!

Plus, shading with dramatically saturated colours is a great way to add life and brightness to a drawing. It's up to your personal tastes how saturated the shadows are, but different colours of shading can help change the colour balance and feeling of the work. <3

I'm so glad you like it!!

Ooh, now the dark red/brown is a useful tip, hadn't seen that one but it explains why on yellow or on skin-tones especially grey shading looks a bit off.

Yes indeed! In real life, shadows are always warm or cool, but never grey. Saturated shadows are the best look! ^^
