Description For school, the topic was book cover. I chose Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.

I was halfway through the first painting when the file got corrupted and everything was lost, somehow from that frustration I went turbo and redid this new one in about a day.

Anyway the format sorta works as a wallpaper too, so enjoy!

Very very pretty. My only crit would be it seems like two pieces slapped together rather than one harmonious design. Still- very nice work.

Thanks It is meant to be that way as it is a book jacket and I take into account what a wraparound cover does.

Memories of a Geisha was an imaginative book but a good amount of the facts was off.

A former Geisha decided to break the code of silence to correct all misinterpretations in a book called "Geisha, A Life".

Comparing the actual cover of the book and yours..

The actual cover is simple and elegant. It is also more powerful and confrontational being as it is a frontal picture. The feel of it as being an old photo also ties in with the overall theme the author is trying to portray in his style of story-telling.

Your cover is more abstract and it gives off a feeling to me of a modernized form of ink painting. It is elegant in it's own right because of it's femininity, which, the more I notice and admire the more I look at it.

The one thing that I don't like about it is the flag symbol on the bottom of the back cover portion. I think that it's not really needed in this piece because it seems like it's just reinforcing the Japanese theme. I personally think that there are enough elements on the cover that reinforce that theme already and the book doesn't really stress the country it's taking place in that much. What it's really about is the journey Sayuri took to get to the end of the book. So, what I'm really saying is that I would've wanted to see something that is taken from the book that would represent the main character emotionally/mentally occupying that space. The only real thing that you have to represent Sayuri, as person, is her eye color.

This is just my opinion and what came to me when I saw it.

Oo I wish there were more commentors like you.
Yes I know that the MOAG book is not accurate and is very sexed up, but I felt like doing an asian painting. I would like to read 'Geisha, A Life' too but I don't think I have the funds to buy it DX.
It is my concern that the painting is not reminiscing enough to fit in with the memoirs theme, but I did this to impress a teacher so I guess my aim was different. I'm glad you feel it works tho.
Now that you mention it I guess the flag symbol was abit redundant. I used it to contrast with the umbrella and wanted to put some WW2 elements with the flag, but that doesn't work with the design. That is something for me to consider before handing it in though.
Thank you very much!

saturnword In reply to luciole [2007-12-04 00:26:08 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean about lack of funds..don't you just envy the people who's libraries have such books?

I think the teacher will be impressed quite well with this pieces, especially with the allusion of the birds coming off the kimono fabric and flying away into the horizon.

Instead of the flag..you could try putting something melancholy from the story in some way..like a symbol of an item that was significant but could work somehow in the collage motif. The reason I say that is because the book is sexed up but very sad/somber too.

And yea.. a WW2 (gun, tank, plane, etc) type of item wouldn't work too well in the softness of this piece I don't think.

I'm happy my comment helped you out with the assignment and I wish good luck on the final product.

My school's library is pretty good art wise (its an art school) but there's not enough novels and things, oh well. If I ever find a library that have contemporary books like that, I'm never coming out!
The teacher liked this painting and said there was nothing he would change, which I think is a good sign. The only thing left to do (without working the pic to death) is the text and typography, but I kinda worked that out already too.
Actually I want the whole painting to be a motif of her kimono, since the book mentions alot of kimono designs, but it didn't work out so well. Those designs are so beautiful but omg.. very difficult to paint D:. And yes.. the book is very much sexed up.. and to be honest I wouldn't be listing it as my favorite books ever, but it is a very visual book and easy to paint.

I agree with you on the library. Mine has alot of old books so I really enjoy the smell of them.

It's good your teacher liked it so much. Kimonos are hard to paint because of the intricate embroidery on them. The simple ones are easier but the ones in the book are really hard to do especially since you have to imagine them first. So it's a process of converting word to image.

The book isn't one of my favorites either. I hope you post the final version of this.

I love old books smell And such crisp thin pages, too.
Yes, the crazy embroidery makes it difficult, also the shiny gold threads they use. I suppose it is possible but that's just too much effort to paint.
I added the text and handed this in, and the teacher does like it very much. Otherwise I did not change the image much though. Still, I'm glad it did well Thanks again.
