Description
Yet another compilation of Helluva Boss-related sketches for my proposed video game adaptation. After last episode’s rather depressing cliffhanger, and the confirmation of a second season, I thought about lightening up the mood a little bit with these ideas.
Counter-clockwise are:
- Moloch’s Diner: a possible location dedicated to the biblical false god/demon Moloch. If you know your Bible studies (or if you played Shin Megami Tensei/Persona), you’ll recall Moloch is associated with CHILD SACRIFICE!!! Just at the top-left of the diner, you can see Eddie (the bratty kid from the Helluva Boss pilot) being prepared as a meal by two chefs. One of the chefs is a harlequin shrimp, a crustacean known for their rather sadistic feeding methods on starfish (if you read The Bikini Bottom Horror, you can tell what Eddie’s punishment is here); the other chef is a Morlock from the 1960’s film adaptation of H. G. Wells’ short story The Time Machine, which have names that sound a lot like Moloch (not helping the fact that their main diet consists of the child-like Eloi).
- some ideations for Charon, the ferryman of the dead. I have three designs of him shown, and I’m still unsure which one I like best: two of them are the cliche “hooded man” (one wearing an Ancient Greek theatre mask, the other resembling a more ancient version of the G-men from Psychonauts), and the last design is a more “modern day” sea captain. Also, there are props surrounding him, consisting of two coins (one with an owl, the other with a gorgon’s head), a flask that he’d probably drink from, his trusty oar, and an ivory pipe carved to resemble a human skull.
- a Sumerian edimmu. On the left of it is a carving found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art that gave me inspiration. I know it shouldn’t be interpreted literally, but when I first saw it I thought “what if that beard were mutton chops”. And so the result is a blue restless
spirit of a Sumerian man that can only be defeated by the use of a special weapon.
- a siren that combines the classical depictions with the modern interpretations. Basically a mermaid with bird wings. While yes, I will be drawing more “classical” depictions of sirens as bird-women, I saw a medieval manuscript which combined both of these versions, and I was like “oh cool, I have got to draw this”. And for those wondering, her breasts are being covered by strands of her hair with feathers tied at the end, giving a bit of a Godiva effect.
- a Fomorian warrior. Basically a Celtic goat-man with glowing eyes, a Stone Age weapon, and immense strength. Just like the siren above, this too would vary in design. Moving on.
- and finally, what I appropriately call “Fizzerpent”. Since Fizzarolli is based on Beetlejuice (and voiced by his Broadway actor, Alex Brightman), it seemed ideal to have a boss fight involving his robotic duplicates, and one of the Robo-Fizz’s resembling the snake form of Beetlejuice (I love actor allusions).
