Description October 12, 2011 I uploaded the first WIP for this: lukequietus.deviantart.com/art…

There I mentioned how it was taking a long time. Ha! It's now been over two years but here she is. My first digital painting completed!

In fact, this was the first piece that wasn't a test to get comfortable with the Wacom. It was the longest, hardest work I've done, but it's certainly my best. Over the past two plus years I've always felt guilty I hadn't finished it, because even 1/3 of the way through it was the best work I'd done by far.

But I did it! It's turned out better than I originally could have imagined two years ago.

Impressive, I am still not very satisfied if it comes to working digitally - only the more I can appreciate your prowess and proficiency there!

Well I remember on the first WIP for this you offered much encouragement. So thank you for that. It's good to finally have it finished. It's been just sitting there for 8 months almost done but I'd made a mess of the hair. So I finally just knuckled down and fixed it.

Do you have a tablet? If you need pointers on getting used to it I'd be happy to help. It is tricky making the transistion. Took me six months to finally get the pencil look figured out.

CtrlPaint.com is the best place for videos on learning digital (and alot of traditional theory and practice techniques) also. I'd highly recommend it to any artist of any style. And they're free.

I use a wacom bamboo on a traditional PC as of now - I will surely check out CtrlPaint.com and I will love to ask for your opinions once I feel like I can sacrifice money on the next upgrade to my gear.

As to my commenting on the WIP - I have to admit I had completely forgotten about having done that, not having see it, though, it made a deep impression then and keeps doing so now. I do not find the hair so bad at all. I found the tutorials of akalilith.deviantart.com/ on hair very illuminating, even though it is traditional drawing. I remember having had something even better, I just cannot find it any more....

Wow... akalilith's pencil work is amazing! I'll check out those tutorials. I'm always looking for a new view on the same problem. And traditional technique is imperative for digital art.

In fact, doing hair in a digital workflow is much easier than traditionally. That was alot of why this piece took so long. I was still clinging to my old habits of gradual build up of tone from light to dark. Once I truly clicked that its better to go too far and paint to big and then just erase to get highlights...eureka. That really hit home after watching the CntrlPaint series. You can see him first go through it here:Β matt-kohr.squarespace.com/dp10…

The bamboo is a good tablet for starting out. I use an Intous4 and the only real difference for drawing/painting is the Bamboo doesn't have tilt detection. But I don't use tilt or even pen pressure all that much to do my stuff. You can get all of those effects with Photoshop.

From the tone of your pencil work I'd say for sketching try use a hard brush at 25-35% opacity and 25% flow and just leave the color on black. Then in the brush palette turn on shape dynamics and set Control to pen pressure, and drop size jitter and min. diameter all the way down. It should "feel" and look like a h4 to HB pencil then. Then just turn of shape dynamics and use a soft brush to do your main shading. That was the settings I used all the way through this piece...it might work for you as a start.
