Sometimes ya just gotta go retro.

Pretty much. And that's true in two ways ^^
Black and white is retro in cartooning history and for me personally because I used to work solely in black and white ^^

This style feels really old school. What are your influences?

Lumdrop In reply to Paixi [2014-05-31 02:19:09 +0000 UTC]

Mmmmwell, I did an influences thinga while ago fav.me/d6pe7gv
But when I narrow it down, the main three external influences are probably Dragon Ball, Final Fantasy, and Adventure Time.

Lately though my focus has been on trying to make my own voice.
I mean, I'll never escape my influences, and I'll probably always get the "your style is very manga" comment, but I'm gonna keep trying to grow and let my art style honestly reflect what I see in my head.

My main internal influence is my own fantasy life: fighting monsters, going on long journeys, helping people, saving the day. That sort of thing ^^
I try to be the hero in real life, but I can't do fantasy heroics in a world where monsters and superpowerful villaingods don't exist.
So I do them through my comics and characters :T

That's a little childish, I know, but hey, that's cartooning ^^
That's storytelling ^u^

So what are your influences?
I'd like to know. Your art was all so thought provoking and unique ^^

Ah, I see the influence from Adventure Time. Your style seems more western than manga. Being a hero in real life is a lot less glorious than comics make it out to be, isn't it?

And I draw my inspiration from life and the Bible but I've been influenced by Mr., Goya, Suzuki Suzukazu, LM-7, James Gurney, JNTHED, and Yoshitoshi ABe.

Oh yeah, big time. In real life, when you do the heroic thing and put yourself out for others, they grow to love you intensely really quick, but it burns out even faster.
Its almost like if you're gonna live that kind of life, you have to make peace with the fact that your friendships are gonna be temporary.

Ahh love this! 8)

I really like all of their expressions, and how Mellalu is so well colored!
It's so solid, I can't see much change on the tone of the black color, in fact I see none! ^^

Great job!

I usually do two layers of black at different angles.
Like, I grind out one later of black with the pen, then for the next I try to have the pen strokes go in a slightly different angle.
Kinda like crosshatching except I'm filling in all the white spots.
That's how I get the black to look so consistent ^^
That also works with evening out colored pencil consistency too.

Of course, I ended up using the curves tool on this a bit, bu~t...

Ooooh I do that too, but rarely. ^^'
When I do, it usually works really well for me too!

Alsoooo, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
