Description
Ah I love how this turned out. Wish the background looked a bit better though. They are definitely a pretty snake
This was taken at the Vancouver Aquarium.
Here's some facts from some sites:
Emerald Tree Boas are very similar to the green tree python . They are bright green in colour with a yellow coloured underside. They have an irregular zigzag stripe along their back and they reach lengths between 1.5 and 2 m (5 - 5.5 ft).
They have a strong prehensile tail which helps them to move around between the branches of trees. They spend their days coiled over branches with their head resting in the middle of the coils and they hunt at night.
Their eyes have vertical pupils which help them to sense movement and they have deep pits in the scales around their mouth for detecting heat given off by their prey.
The emerald tree boa can be found throughout the Amazon basin of South America. This is an area with a high average annual rainfall, and high levels of humidity even when it is not raining
This snake inhabits tropical forests that are lush with vegetation and ideal for camouflage. It is usually, but not always, found in close proximity to waterways, such as marshes and swamps.
The females of this species are ovoviviparous. This means the babies develop in eggs while inside the mother, but emerge as live snakes at birth. (The eggs are retained inside the mother’s body.) A healthy female can give birth to 10 to 16 young snakes at a time.
