Description
"Under the sea is where it's at!!"When I think of mermaids, I think they ought to not look like a person wearing a fish tail and have a perfect line between their human and fish parts. From an evolutionary standpoint, I think it makes more sense for them to have parts that make them suited towards living in water. So they have webbed fingers, scales along the body, and fins for cutting through water. And coloration that would make them a bit camouflaged in water. I dunno. This is how my scientific mind works.
This was second to the top most requested deviation to have re-done:
So here it is. I know I've not been drawing anything new as of late in favor of re-doing a lot of older works. But I'm in a semi art block and I also feel the need to clean up the horrible works I've done in the past. x____x;; Looking back, it's hard to understand why my past self thought any of these things were any good.
This time around, I took references of actual coral reefs, fish and how water gradients from the bottom up. I still kept the original color scheme for the hair because I like the idea of aqua colored hair~ And just because of my childhood idea that mermaids (at least the female ones) would decorate their hair, starfish, pearls, and sea flowers. I think I need to work at how hair floats in water, but relatively happy with the motion in this pic.
Wonder how long it is until I start to dislike this one...?

I love this!
I love how you did the scales that's really pretty amazing!
I like the background and the bubbles
I love the way you did her hair and everything!
All these different blues are just really lovely
Loving the bubbles in the background tooo
Yeah what you said do make sense, they just kind of give them a tale and call it a mermaid, It's more more creative to think beyond them just having a fish lower part and think of things that would also aid them in living underwater. Both are still pretty but it's just good to see different variations.
I like the fins on her arms.
And the webbed hands look really well.
I also like the cute little sea horses in the back!
And the pearls in her hair
Keep up the good work!

She looks fantastic!! Β I love your thinking about how a mermaid should look...right up my alley! Β I think she'd look nice with a web between her forefinger and thumb, too. Β Another evolutionary branch I love to develop is the more amphibious version, where she still has legs, but with webbed toes, and fins on the legs and an upper body like yours with fins and webbing, too. Β Great work..hope to see more fishies!!
