I'm usually into semi-realism when it comes to free hand drawing and realism when it's portraits with a photo reference but looking at this painting I have the revolting urge to master hyper realism, too Great job Lun and thanks for the inspiration!

I do not doubt that I could, I just need a good teacher and a lot of practice. I am largely self taught as an artist, my best teachers have been books. They helped, but there are a few things I am not understanding that a competent person would be able to teach me that a book could not. I don't know what I am doing wrong to make my drawings look like something fit only for illustrations in children's books in their overall quality. Sometimes that is fine if I am trying to do a cartoon, but frustrating when I am trying to do something of the quality you know how to achieve. The very best drawing I did, "Beauty In Black" was actually almost a cheat. I tried drawing the people free hand repeatedly and failed. So I gave up and traced the photographs. The rest I did free hand and managed to do the best coloring job ever. Maybe you could give me a few pointers if you look over my gallery? Maybe you can see how I can improve?

HI, i am self taught too.
My experience for learn from books is that you cant just read once. you need read times to times to digest it
also practice is at upmost important too
For me, practice is important, but not just practice, you need to practice wisely.
Set a target for what you wanna learn from practice, for example, color, shape and form, or value and shadow etc
learn from photo is no problems but cant blindly just copy and paste.
hope it help

Thanks, I will do as you suggest. I can't stop drawing anyway, it is to much a part of what I am. Just a matter of getting enough time and materials to do it. I am very much in need of a restock.
I am also a writer, I published one novel on Amazon.com. My book Eden Symbiotic is available both in Kindle and in book form. My book still has a few spelling mistakes that I missed, I am working on fixing it. With luck, the issues will be all fixed by next Monday. I am even planning to drop my price on the Kindle version if it is possible to do so. Just type in the name and my book will pop right up.
Thanks for your advice and have a lovely day.

Jesus. I know it was insane to get the detail into the plastic material in the image. Perhaps, a good level experimenting with different shadows and highlights. Well, it played off because you nailed it.

It looks so realistic, yet has the right about of texture to distinguish it from a photo. Really nice work! I love the rendering of the plastic.
