Description

(I’ve been making lots of these mini gardens lately, but I think this one was my favorite to make!)

Recently I went to SCRAP, our local nonprofit that salvages and resells pretty much anything that can be made into an art project. In a bin of random wood bits I found this little rough-hewn frame; it had a bit of damage and needed a couple of nails pounded into it, but it was sturdy otherwise. As I was looking at it that evening, I had a sudden stroke of inspiration, and this is the result! I took a disk of cherry wood from a trimmed branch and added a little “fence” of wooden toothpicks. I then wove secondhand yarn through the fence, and suspended the entire platform from four hand-braided cords made of more reclaimed yarn. Then I made this swing a little home for a single air plant (Tillandsia ionantha Mexico).

This little terrarium is incredibly easy to care for. No daily misting, as this could potentially cause mold to grow on the wood and yarn. Instead, all you have to do is soak theTillansdia in water for 2-3 hours every two weeks, and add a bit of organic plant fertilizer to the water during spring and fall. Let the plant air-dry on a towel, and then place it back in its nest.

This terrarium measures 7 1/4" x 5 3/4" x 2 3/4" and will be shipped assembled (plant may be wrapped separately in the same box). Live plants may not be shipped outside of the U.S.

Here ‘tis on Etsy.
