Description
Random has just found a screenshot/artwork they like a lot. So much so that they think it will make a REALLY AWESOME base. How do they make this happen?1) Save it.
2) Open it in Photoshop or MS Paint or whatever graphics program they prefer.
3) Create a new layer above it.
4) Trace the outline of the screenshot/artwork.
5) Delete the original screenshot/artwork.
6) Fill the areas that should be filled (eg: the body, eyes, mouth, etc)
7) Stamp their name on it.
8) Share.
9) Make sure they mention: "you MUST credit me if you use this base!"
OR
...
3) Use your magic wand tool to select then delete the insides of the image.
4) Clean the leftover outlines up.
...

I'm not here to get into an argument over what's acceptable or not on dA. My question is:
How is this not tracing?
I've talked to a few people and they said that it's not, because it's for a base. But from the way they described how they make them and crap like that, it is.
I don't get it. I should stop trying to
Anyway, made this to stave off the oncoming rant on the topic. Personally, I don't use bases, but I respect the base makers who put in hard work and effort into making their original creations. Kudos to you~

....are you drunk? that is 100% not true XD the mona lisa was a personal piece that was repeatedly painted over many times over a span of several years having been changed several times through those repaints and worhol's soup cans were a combination satire and desperation to not be seen as a copycat(and even then he got quite a bit of criticism for making them) and neither of those wereΒ intended to be used as a public resources or falsely claimed to be anything they weren't
you seriously need to sober up and come up with less stupid excuses XD

and taking a screenshot, filling it entirely white and call it a "base" is still recoloring. =/

i used alot of traceing back when i was into furcadia.
since the game use's sprites and things, i would shrink an image down, and trace it's line art and shadeings so i could make a retrostyled portrait that could fit inside the game.
digital traceing is one thing
what of actual physical traceing?
place sheet over paper over paper and try to sketch the image u know?

I have a question. An artist on here (not me because I don't draw lol) is getting shit from someone because he "traced". He hand-drew the picture from Bleach of all the girls in their bathing suits at the beach. He traced parts of Yoroichi and Rukia, then a part of Orihime's face. He did the shading and the rest of the work on his own. Is that considered base tracing or art theft? He barely traced them, just some for a base to start, then did the rest on his own.

I think its both to be honest....not sure about the art theft bit though....but he still traced it...so it is tracing art done by somebody else

honestly theres a reason why i dont do bases..ill do it once in awhile but theres a reason i used to say
" I DONT USE BASES"
because i think its just lazy..i mean come on..using bases constantly isnt using your work..your just using something that was some one else's ;/ idk..i just dont like bases.. when i use them i feel so god damn lazy

I can't seem to understand why DA allows people to make ugly ass bases for others to use. The results aren't pretty. I'm tired of seeing bases with horrible anatomy and with skin tight clothes painted on them. Especially when the people "attempt" to add hair on the base and make them look like they got into a fight with a razor or something.
And these are the same idiots that feel proud after they accomplished making an ugly, three-minute pic of the base while shouting "DIS TOOK ME SIX HOURS TO MAKE GAIZ!" and you know for a split second that they're talking out of their ass. Then their dumbfuck friends will feed lies to them and tell them how pretty the used base looks instead of telling them how god-awful it looks.
Okay, I said a mouthful, but that's all I got to say. I agree 100% with this stamp.

I mean I sure don't use other people artwork-- but I use stock pictures ( and credit them ) as reference. Basically find a STOCK photo, or a PUBLIC photo on DA and I leave the window open and start drawing, using the photo as a reference. (So no tracing here) But I was wondering if thats still considered okay. Been doing it for a while, and I figured if the photo is public, then it can help me improve and such. And by public, I mean the artist literally allows use of it. Explicitly.

lupisashes In reply to MedjaiRift [2010-10-06 07:45:19 +0000 UTC]
I don't think of that as tracing. I think of tracing as outright using another person's work in your own. Whether by literally tracing it or simply removing the colours and keeping the lines.
What you've described is what I'd classify as copying. I think you can improve from doing that (it's how I learnt to draw), but you have to explicitly state, "this was copied from this" and give credit. Which you said you did, so that's alright. It's even better that you're using stock images.
That's just my opinion though. I'm sure many disagree with me.

I think bases need to go in general. It keeps people from learning how to improve their art. That being said I still respect the people who make their bases by scratch.

I agree. Really I know DA allows bases but I think DA should be more clear that the bases have to be derived from your own work AND NOT from screenshots, etc... because it is stealing. Seriously it doesn't take any artistic knowledge to follow the lines. I should know, I often ink my own work digitally, it takes time but its not something that could be consider an art form on its own.
so in short:

SqueekyTheBalletRat [2010-10-01 01:57:01 +0000 UTC]
There are two types of traced bases. Ones that are just the pose, which I think are ok because a pose is a pose. And then there are the traced bases that have the clothing and/ or hair as well, which I find to be copyright infringement. Those kinds of bases also don't allow for someone to actually try at pixel doll making... Did that make sense?
π: 0 β©: 1
Karmillina In reply to SqueekyTheBalletRat [2011-01-09 07:45:14 +0000 UTC]
But with the pose, you are still copying the shapes of head, arms, eyes, shadow position, etc. How is that not copyright infringement? You can reproduce a pose, in a new picture, put adding a new layer over a picture and copying "just the pose" seems to me as wrong as tracing the entire picture. Of course the bases with hair and clothes are just lazy on the users part.

If they drew it themselves, its not as bad, but still, this site is for art you make completely yourself. I'm not saying it's wrong when it's an original base because it's no different than doll making, but this is not what this site is for.

π: 0 β©: 0
lupisashes In reply to Gray-Rose [2010-05-18 14:56:27 +0000 UTC]
Personally, I don't either when it's someone posting another person's edited base.
I can see their use and value if someone sat down and made them themselves, from scratch. Like if you're designing a costume; it would be time consuming to draw the same pose(s) again and again. I see making yourself a base or two as practical in that regard.
But I don't agree with people using other people's bases and posting their edited versions online. Like you said, they don't really give you proper practice. They're just shortcuts; all the really hard work has been taken out of them. Like one's battle with anatomy. I both love and hate that crap ;_;
