Description Finally! My first animation on DeviantART

"To go beyond" was my final year project in university, it was my second piece of 2D animation that I actually complete.

It is just a very simple story set in a corner of the world about the affection between two individuals. Lives fade, lives continue, live to go beyond.

The whole piece was done in Photoshop and Imageready mainly, and edited in After Effect.

And for the music..
The background music is composed and copyrighted by me.

dear god, the music, animation and oh the style and history. waah. if the movie would take longer i'd probably start crying. this music, oh my god. i've never heard such beautiful melody before, were you the one who composed it?

Yes I composed the music when I finished the whole animation, and it was just few days before my very very final presentation to get my grade. lol

I had a piece of main melody stuck in my mind for while, then I turned on the recorder and play it on piano with different variation, and then I extracted few segments of the record and "construct" it into a piece of complete music to fit into this animation. It was pretty magical I have to say.

When I pressed play, your story trapped me, and I couldn't think of anything else until it finished. I think that the music is what catched me, and then the drawing wouldn't let me go.
Simply magic.

Actually, I don't roam deviant art that much. I saw your video from my sister's laptop, shukugumo .

Your video is very touching. I like the story you have, I like the message you write, I like the melancholic music you composed and I like the soft colours you use. ^_^
The theme you've taken is very general "Lives fade, lives continue, live to go beyond … and something that’s forever - Love". But it's a thing that nobody has no experience to. Therefore, when I see your video, I can grasp the feeling - the closeness between you and your mom, also the sadness of when she left you - that you want to convey. To stop crying over a loved one is never easy and despite what people mostly say, we can still move forward even though we're not over with our grieve (at least that's what I believe). Oh, and though you did say that there are wrong notes in the music, I actually didn't notice.

You managed to describe the character's emotion awesomely with those face expressions. The flow of the animation is a bit cropped in a few scene like when the girl walking then turned to running in the grassland. But the scene after that, the one showing the girl standing upon wavy grass, that leave me breathless. It's simply beautiful! (and that one is smooth )

Don't worry, with such a beautiful animation, colours and story, a bit of imperfection is the one which made it into a precious art.
Thanks for creating this animation.

Thanks for your kind comment, I feel so warm when reading it ^^

Actually after the presentation of this project(and mark was given, lol) my tutor encouraged me to keep on working on this animation again and again... This animation is a bit incomplete (the old time-running-short excuse XD)I do want to fill in more detail about the old lady and the child and especially the place they live if I ever remake it. I am not sure when but it's definitely planned in the future.

Thanks again for watching the animation, I am so glad that you grasp the feeling and enjoyed it ^^

I actually understand it quite well.
And I find it beautiful.
The way that the girl and the elderly woman's relationship blossoms so easily is amazing and endearing, and I can really relate to what the girl felt when her friend passed on.
This is truly great stuff. You've done a beautiful job.

i have no words to express... is really a good animation. But i cant understand how did you do it? manually the drawns, and scaned so colored in photoshop?

and how to make te colours be so fluid in each part to be in the end some scene that is so soft the changes... you should be very pround.

hope you can anwser me ^__^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lurazeda In reply to Makoarts [2008-08-14 06:25:58 +0000 UTC]

The whole animation was drawn in Photoshop.. since this software is already "pencil and paper" to me lol.

I got references from 3D models and continuous photo shots etc, and then drew the frames in Photoshop, one frame one layer (For a walk cycle it takes only 8 frames to complete)

And I also switch the psd file to ImageReady from time to time, see if the motion is smooth.

I know there should be better 2D animation tool outside.. (another one I've used is Toomboon) but the brushes in Photoshop is just too great to pass >.<

The colouring part is a bit tricky, It's like decorating a full plate of cookies with few different ingredients, you pick the cheeries first and put one on every cookies, then move on to icing, lol. I lined up all the frames in a large canvas and same layer, and then coloured them all together. It helps to prevent the shading not jumping too much in each frames, but yet there's a sightly difference.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Makoarts In reply to lurazeda [2008-08-14 12:54:22 +0000 UTC]

so, do you mean, did you put each frame side by side to paint, or when you was painting did you use a "last frame reference" and change a litlle bit?

well all the ways, i think it was what witch take most the time , or not?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lurazeda In reply to Makoarts [2008-08-25 03:16:59 +0000 UTC]

Side by side to paint, because the colouring may jump too much if I go for the "last frame reference" approach.
