Description
Again, at the request of friends. I've never played the Half-Life series, though it's been on my list for a while, now... I'm thinking I should fix it, soon.Well, thanks to the wonderful Wikipedia , I got an idea of the plot, as well as some info on the monsters.
After perusing the monsters, I elected to draw that Ichthyosaur/Ichthycanthus-thing. Just because, I mean.... man, is it uuuugly. And as fate would have it, all the references I found seemed to contradict each other in some fashion... which was odd. So I kinda made some stuff up as I went. I'll blame most differences on the fact that the thing's mouth is actually semi-closed, as opposed to hanging open like a barn door. And I tilted the tail fin-thing, 'cause that was one feature the references couldn't agree on. So now it's angled. ^_^
And look! I drew a person! ...ok, so it's only Freeman's legs. From underwater. But I think there's hope for me yet as far as peoples.

I have played Half-Life 2! And.... My god! WHY DID I NOT PLAY THIS GAME SOONER??! It was awesome! I am currently playing through HL-1, HL-Blue Shift, and HL- Opposing Forces. ....Yeah, I got turned into an HL fan about 2 minutes into the second game. >.>

ARGH! GET THE MEMORIES OUT OF MY HEAD!
WHenever you play half-life (which you will HAVE TO DO (HAVE TO)) you will learn to hate and fear this monster! My brother had my other play through the parts when this fish appears cause he couldn't take it! And I myself... Well I managed, with a heart that was jumping out of my chest!
You really cought him good (the fish I mean)... Can't you draw him dead instead? XD

I hold to the stance that water, representing chaos, is naturally scary. Therefore, anything that comes out of it has to be terrifying.
(Okay, so that might not be entirely true...)

AWESOME! Simply Brutal! Glad to see the edit, Your a fan Though personally I prefer HL-1's Horror feel. I never felt that in HL2

Yeah, HL-1 does have a definite horror feel to it, doesn't it? While HL-2 goes more for the dystopian, "1984" feel instead. I never really thought of HL-1 as having a horror feel before because shortly after I played it, I played F.E.A.R.. That kind of put a different spin on "horror" for me.

I wish it looked like this in-game. The ones you end up fighting in half-life and in hl2 mods aren't even scary, with their big goofy grins and stupid cartoony eyes. But this..I'd be scared of this. It looks like it'd smell like a giant fish instead of foam rubber.

T-the...f-f-fish....
The Ichthyosaur is one of THE most terrifying things for me in Half-Life or ANY FPS that has underwater fish fighting, due to the fact that it's the obligatory rule in any game: If there's water, there's ALWAYS something that will eat you." Although being proportionally strange, it moves FAST. Well, faster than what you can swim.

archiveofregret In reply to ChaosBrix [2008-10-22 21:13:19 +0000 UTC]
Imagine swimming though the water and then you notice after 15 seconds, a BIG ASS ICHTYOSAUR AS BIG AS A FOOTBALL FIELD WAS LURKING IT'S WAY TOWARD YOUR DESTINATION. Why didn't this ever happen in any videogame ever? Giant fish are fuckin' scary as hell. But Valve decided to make theirs small and stupid-looking.

Ichthyosaur.
~noun
1. A biologically improbable aquatic monster pitted against the protagonist of the the Half-Life games.
2. .....creepycrawlyFASTohmygodDOOM
-------------
Yeah, water in FPS=Chomping You or Something Else Not Good. (I ran into water several times playing FEAR, and was convinced that something awful would pop out to eat me.... nothing ate me, but that doesn't mean nothing awful happened, either....)
And yeah, the way it moves freaks me out.

Aha! Thank you! I've been wondering what the thing's full name was for a while now, so it's nice to know.
Man, those things were creepy when you loaded a game after having tranquilized them... Load up a game and they'd all be looking at you like they wanted to eat you. Then they'd roll over and play dead. The first time that happened, I was convinced they were faking, and would start leaping out of the water to eat me the moment I turned my back on them. But then, I have an overactive imagination sometimes.
Again, thanks for the name, and the comment. ^^

Yes! I recently played HL-2 and that is exactly what it's like! Though admittedly, I ended up with something more like, "stupid teleporter landed me in the water -Can I swim?-- Is that-? CRAAA~AHHHHHi Dr. Breen...... Don't mind me...."

Thankee kindly. ^ ^
It took me a while to get refs for it, and yeah, a lot of them were awful. I finally found a really nice rendered version of it as a desktop somewhere or other, that, while differed from all the others, looked the best.
And I'm sure Mr. Freeman would protest and say that crowbars work for most everything, except... Ah, yes. He doesn't actually talk, does he? Alas.

No worries. I think I understand- at least somewhat. The few in-game screenshots of it that I actually found kind of... well... put me on edge, to be honest. That doesn't happen very often. And certainly not very easily.
But yeah, I think I drew it like I did to try and make it less capable of setting me on edge and failed, as it now bothers me a little bit more.
(and if I wasn't interested in the game before drawing this, I certainly was after)
...and y'know what else? Staring at your icon does not decrease the time it takes to type responses.... but it's swirly. Sooo swirly. @.-.@

(my icon was made /w that effect in mind)
the intro sequence to the first half life is excellent (simply love how they run the credits, a very cinematic and interactive experience overall)
the second half life was subpar compared to the 1st (imo), so don't feel at a loss having to 'settle' /w the older one

muaha, frozen by the avatar your productivity levels have reached 0 :joker:
i'm actually thinking of applying for an opening at the local gamestop, or there's a position in grafixwork (but i just got out of that)...
it's deffinitely cheaper to dig bargain/old games like half-life.
another one i'd recommend that runs around 10bux for the computer is halo (but you need a relatively good computer for it to run well), multiplayer is uber fun on this one (the pc exclusive maps are a blast) and it plays like a movie in single player

Luthrai In reply to stipend [2006-09-12 05:32:11 +0000 UTC]
Unfortunately, my laptop's graphics card is uber-lame and can't handle Halo. Played it on other computers, though. Well, at least multiplayer. Much fun. ^.-.^
Though once I eventually get m'self a new(ish) compy, Halo's also on the list of things I want to play.
....this list is getting fairly long fairly quickly. Alas. Such is the way of things.
Ooh, gamestop opening. Fun. Or at least, much more fun than my job, I imagine.

I work on the production line floor of a linen rental company at the moment (repetitive, tedious, and unbelievably non-intellectually stimulating labor- yech). It's a very recent development, though it's already at the point where I need to start mocking it or let it depress me... I'm trying the mocking route, the fruits of some of that endeavor should be posted in the next week or so. ^.-.^
So yeah, Gamestop's gotta be more fun than that.... maybe. I'd think so, at least.

well, i guess jobs are supposed to suck.
if they didn't- you wouldn't really have any reason to persue anything else
so you clean uniforms for renters?
i know what's helped me in the past /w tedious jobs is playing ninja/samurai (or whatever else). get your function down to a science- do it quick(safe) and effectively/efficiently. bow. be silly- but have no reason for them to fire you based upon production. it may even be fun to attempt to remember everyone's name, and great them daily as best of friends (even the grumps)
in short, make your job a game.
