Description
Minor Edit: I would like to have to thank each and every one of you for each and everyNow back to my main comments.
________________________________________________
EDIT 6: (I really need to re-do this, don't I?) The video tutorial is finally done, three years late. But done!
EDIT 3: Given that the main query I get concerns the icing, and that it's a question I can't help much with, I'm very glad that somebody has found a good tutorial on how to make chocolate-fudge icing! SironaSelkie found this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvl7iE… and seems fairly happy with the results. I hope that's helpful.
EDIT 2: Oh my gosh, thank you for the Daily Deviation! I just saw that I had a comment- and fav-spam in my box, started to get suspicious, and went to check the DD list - and there it was! I'm really honoured, and I hope that it's useful to lots of you out there. Many thanks to Nyiana-sama for the suggestion and FantasyStock for the actual DD.
I'm afraid that there is no way I can cope with thanking you all individually for favourites on it right now. But please know that I really appreciate every single one, that I hope you have a use for it, and that I would love to know if you do use it.
My cakes:

I would LOVE to see any cakes decorated using this technique! If anyone follows the tutorial and you take a photo, if you post a comment here or on the cake, I'll link all of them at the bottom of these comments. Looking forward to seeing them guys!
Whew! That took a long time.
This is the tutorial I made to accompany my birthday cake lutra-gem.deviantart.com/art/C… which so many people liked. I really do love all you guys, and you make me feel a better artist.
EDIT: I would like to say thank you hAtObAaKaQuAy for correcting me; the characters on the side are actually katakana, not kanji.
I apologise if anyone thinks that this is in the wrong category, but the only food and drink related tutorial category was in the Non-art gallery, and that pissed me off, as this is art. So I stick it in paintings since it's just painting with a different medium.
I hope that this tutorial is of some use to you, and I apologise for any mistakes I have made in the writing of this; I'm afraid that if I make a mistake I have to type the whole thing out again once I've left the editor, which sucks.

Did (I quote) "Master chief dukin' it out wif the white ranger from the original power rangers....." This gal's bro ate the cake before she could photograph it. So that sucks. But she says that this tutorial DOES work using frosting/icing. She also says to make sure you have the colours you want for it ready made, especially the black.

oh I'm terribly sorry, I just can't stop myself o.o (it's not really important at all.. especially seen as your cake is amazing ) but those are not kanji ^-^ they are katakana =3 (and the last line is suposed to be a downward line when the sentence is written downward (otherwice it becomes the letter 1, and not part of the name)..... not that it really matters though
) educational fact of the day XD but really this is a wonderful cake
wish I could get a cake like that one day >.<

I did mention in the Artist Comments that I had been corrected on the kanji/katakana issue. If I ever have the time to redo the tutorial I will make that correction. But I didn't know about the downward line! I worked out the signs by comparing the (horizontal) titles that come up when naming the characters in the anime, so it's not surprising I got that wrong.
I'm glad that you like the cake though - and really, I have no advice other than to make one yourself if you want one!

oh sorry, I'm not that smart so of course I didn't read the entire text XD I figured that's what happened ^^ honest mistake, japanese doesn't have the easiest writing system xD =3 I really should, shouldn't I? but I have failed melting chocolate before(have no idea how I did it o.o) so I'm not sure I can make it XD

It's okay - there's a LOT of text in there, with all the edits and tips I've stuffed in. I've never actually studied Japanese at all, though I used to intend to. Working out what I DID put on the cake consisted of comparing "Haninozuka" and "Morinozuka" to work out which bit was the "nozuka" Might you be able to get someone to make you one, then?

Nope! My birthday isn't until September so I hadn't given it any thought yet. Now you've asked though... Usually I pick a series that caught my fancy that year and pick my favourite character that has fewest dark clothes (I'm not a fan of dark chocolate). Since I started uni a few weeks after my last birthday the only series I've had time to see are Sherlock and DRRR!! Sherlock I don't think I'd dare to try on a cake (it would end up being John, anyway) and... DRRR!! has lots of fantastic characters... who wear black or have black hair. I guess I could do Shizuo or Kida, but Shizuo has his black bartender's uniform, and much as I like Kida he's not my favourite. I could make my biannual return to FMA, I guess. Oh, maybe I could do Stephanie Brown as a Robin rather than Batgirl... That could be fun, actually. But no, at this stage I'm not making any decisions!

BalthazarLove In reply to Lutra-Gem [2012-03-09 21:37:58 +0000 UTC]
oh you really should do shizuo!! (loves him<3<3) XD you could do him in just the white shirt and black tie, so it's mostly white
Understand the lack of animetime -_- uni-student myself xD but if you have the time, you really, really should check out this series "natsume yujinchou"!! It's absolutely wonderful!! and the main characters (blond dude and an awsome cat) would look great on a cake XD (I think)
[link] what do you think?
(and of course I'll "watch" you XD can't miss those delicious, pretty cakes now, can I?)

haha XD list getting long? XD my list has become so lengty it's depressing -_-' faaainally finished D.Grey-man though XD (good for meeee xD ignoring studies and watching anime...... -.-... but when you're studyin' japanese it's not the worst thing to watch anime XD (or so I keep telling myself..)

Lutra-Gem In reply to BalthazarLove [2012-03-10 10:32:54 +0000 UTC]
The list has always been far too long. I have a decent net connection in my room at uni, but a lot of sites are blocked and I don't have time anyway. Until very recently the connection at home was terrible too, so it wasn't practical for me to watch or read anything of great length. Plus, I'd prefer to get hold of things legally, where possible. I might take out a subscription to CrunchyRoll over the summer and watch some stuff.
And yeah, I guess there's some reason in that. As a music student, it's okay for me to lie in bed listening to a CD and call it "expanding my sound world"... but I rarely have the time for that anyway.

haha totally know what you mean xD I used to have absolutely terrible connection at home O.O (seriously, it took from 1 to 2 hours to stream ONE episode of naruto XD was the time I had just discovered anime, and was hooked from the first second, so of course I waited for HOURS and HOURS loading XD) stupid schooool blocking sites like that XD but yeey I'm also at crunchyroll! (and my boyfriend was kind enough to buy a YEAR membership to himself....which mostly I use XD) you should find me XD name's Nemmy ^^
And seriously O.O sounds like you have it busy <:c one must always have time for muuusiiiic O.O XD

Of course I have it busy! I'm in university and I want to get a good degree out of it! And by its nature, that means playing/singing in ensembles (six for me at the moment), individual practice, composition, music theory, essays, history... Keeps me out of mischief. Occasionally it gets to the point where I'm sick of it though and I have to go off and do some writing or reading.

Very cool. This seems like it would be much easier to do as a frozen buttercream transfer, then then it could also be in color without all being white chocolate. But then it wouldn't be chocolate at all lol
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lutra-Gem In reply to chibireaper [2012-02-08 07:56:01 +0000 UTC]
I haven't tried it myself with anything other than chocolate, but I've been fairly reliably informed that the basic methods are applicable to most types of cake decoration (so long as the base is firm enough to hold the pin-pricks). If you want to have a go not using chocolate, go for it!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chibireaper In reply to Lutra-Gem [2012-02-09 03:37:53 +0000 UTC]
No no, this is a totally different technique. You don't need to do the pin pricks because you don't do it directly on the cake. You take the pic you want and lay wax paper over it (so you can still see the image) and then pipe the outline in black icing and then pipe and fill in all the color. Then freeze it, and then press it onto your cake (icing down) and peel off the wax paper. Here is a link to a tutorial: [link]
I bet you could do this with chocolate painting too, you would just have to remember to bottom layers will end up as the top when you finish.

Lutra-Gem In reply to chibireaper [2012-02-09 08:10:49 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I see what you mean! I genuinely don't know how well it would work for chocolate - I'd actually expect the chocolate to snap, but that's just me... But regardless of that point, from my own experience I think I would find the working-backwards element hard, as I genuinely do paint with the chocolate - mixing and layering and everything. If I did it backwards there'd be almost no room for mistakes. Thank you very much for showing me this, though.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chibireaper In reply to Lutra-Gem [2012-02-09 08:34:27 +0000 UTC]
Haha, yeah chocolate is a little less forgiving than buttercream. But if you don't chill it solid it would still be pliable to bend without snapping. And I can see how the painting aspect would be really tough with the transfer technique. I'm not that great at painting, so the "pipe-by-numbers" is a little more my speed And no problem with sharing C: the more you know the more you grow!

Lutra-Gem In reply to vampydani [2012-01-22 17:33:46 +0000 UTC]
As I mention in the Artist's Comments, I use chocolate-fudge icing, but I don't know how to make it myself as my mum makes the cake, I do the decoration. However, someone very kindly linked me to a tutorial she used on making it: [link] Otherwise, any other icing/frosting that has a firm set should work. I think there are some other tips and suggestions from people in the Artist's Comments, including on the use of dyes for the chocolate.
