Description
Minor Edit: I would like to have to thank each and every one of you for each and everyNow back to my main comments.
________________________________________________
EDIT 6: (I really need to re-do this, don't I?) The video tutorial is finally done, three years late. But done!
EDIT 3: Given that the main query I get concerns the icing, and that it's a question I can't help much with, I'm very glad that somebody has found a good tutorial on how to make chocolate-fudge icing! SironaSelkie found this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvl7iE… and seems fairly happy with the results. I hope that's helpful.
EDIT 2: Oh my gosh, thank you for the Daily Deviation! I just saw that I had a comment- and fav-spam in my box, started to get suspicious, and went to check the DD list - and there it was! I'm really honoured, and I hope that it's useful to lots of you out there. Many thanks to Nyiana-sama for the suggestion and FantasyStock for the actual DD.
I'm afraid that there is no way I can cope with thanking you all individually for favourites on it right now. But please know that I really appreciate every single one, that I hope you have a use for it, and that I would love to know if you do use it.
My cakes:

I would LOVE to see any cakes decorated using this technique! If anyone follows the tutorial and you take a photo, if you post a comment here or on the cake, I'll link all of them at the bottom of these comments. Looking forward to seeing them guys!
Whew! That took a long time.
This is the tutorial I made to accompany my birthday cake lutra-gem.deviantart.com/art/C… which so many people liked. I really do love all you guys, and you make me feel a better artist.
EDIT: I would like to say thank you hAtObAaKaQuAy for correcting me; the characters on the side are actually katakana, not kanji.
I apologise if anyone thinks that this is in the wrong category, but the only food and drink related tutorial category was in the Non-art gallery, and that pissed me off, as this is art. So I stick it in paintings since it's just painting with a different medium.
I hope that this tutorial is of some use to you, and I apologise for any mistakes I have made in the writing of this; I'm afraid that if I make a mistake I have to type the whole thing out again once I've left the editor, which sucks.

Did (I quote) "Master chief dukin' it out wif the white ranger from the original power rangers....." This gal's bro ate the cake before she could photograph it. So that sucks. But she says that this tutorial DOES work using frosting/icing. She also says to make sure you have the colours you want for it ready made, especially the black.

Meh, I'll accept, you don't seem to be some old perv posing under a photo. I warn you, I'm not very active on Facebook, and I'm not really one for meeting people, at least not on an individual basis, nor giving out contact details. So please don't be offended if I'm reluctant to attend an event, I barely have time to see my old friends anyway.

This is fantastic!
Just one note: Your tutorial is missing a step: the icing on the cake before you pin your picture to it. What kind of icing are you using for a smooth surface that doesn't stick to the paper, and how long do you have to let it dry?
I don't know if my hands are still steady enough to decorate properly (I've been developing hand tremors these last few years), but back in the day, the best I could do was lay a drawing on top of the icing and slide a toothpick along the main lines to leave some trace of shape under it. Yer method is SO much better!
And painting looks more controllable than laying down a line of icing from a decorating tube, at least for me. So I'm planning to try this for my friends' birthdays and see how it goes. It'd just be handy to know the best icing for the underlying surface.
Thanks for sharing yer technique!

Lutra-Gem In reply to NonieR [2010-09-23 16:02:58 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
The main reason I didn't include it is because I actually played no part in the cake-making or icing of the cake; also, I assumed that most people would be able to find cake-making instructions elsewhere. However, I've had so many people ask me about the icing that I will try to persuade my mum to show me how to make it and I will give an explanation at least when I re-do the tutorial (nothing major, just correcting a few mistakes and updating some stuff).
In answer to your question, it is chocolate-fudge icing - and it does sometimes stick to the paper if you lean too hard on your design. My mum usually does it the evening before I intend to decorate it, so it has overnight to set. However, anything that sets firm and will take the pinpricks (e.g. marzipan, fondant) should work well - regular icing can work, but it tends to squish.
I hope that's useful, and if you have any more questions I can try to answer them. Good luck with your own cakes!

Thanks!
I'm still primarily a buttercream fan, because it tastes good AND because my hands have always had at least a little tremor, so my work's never been precise enough to NEED the perfection of fondant. But a good chocolate fudge icing would indeed make a smoother base without giving up on flavor.
You're right that buttercream wouldn't work well with pins; once you crack the surface in a couple of places near each other, you'd get softer icing coming up from below and sticking to the paper. I'm hoping yer mum's willing to share her recipe with the world, but even if not--even if I stick to buttercream, and therefore still need to do the light tracethrough with a toothpick instead of the fine pinwork--yer painting technique itself should still work, and I very much look forward to using it.

Lutra-Gem In reply to NonieR [2010-09-27 18:22:41 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome!
I'm not particularly a fan of buttercream, as I find it much too sweet for me - I've never tried working with it, although I've used normal glacé icing.
I will see if it's practical for me to learn and do a tutorial. If I do, it probably won't be for a while as we're both very busy, but I will try to hunt down anyone who asked about it, including you.

Really? I've never tried it myself, but my mum (who taught me this originally) told me that if you add food-colouring the chocolate tends to go all grainy and lumpy. Still, if you know from experience that it works, then thanks for letting me know!
