Description
Wow, two submissions in one day.Man, do I ever love cryptids. Creatures that may or may not exist. Such as the chupacabra, bigfoot, or the Loch Ness, to name a few.
I want to get into cryptozoology.
The Chupacabra, translated to "Goat sucker", is often described as a reptilian looking canine with a forked tongue and long spikes sticking out of its spine. It is extremely thin, and has exaggerated claws and teeth. Hairless and can be scaly, it also has eyes that emit a faint red glow.
There is another appearance, alien like creature, but that didn't appeal to me quite as much.
So here's my interpretation of a Chupacabra. I think I leaned a little too much towards that canine side, much to my dismay. But I still like the result.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can add in the background. Its lacking something.
Someone should start a club that is all about cryptozoology. I would join.
Here's a close up of its face: i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii…

Awesomeness! Cryptids are so darn cool...

She is more of the canine side but its still awesome. You know for someone that lived in P.R, I never got to see the Chupacabra. But I remember there was an outbreak of the Chupacabra in P.R. I even remember me and my mom owning a Chupacabra shirt. Haha, good and scary times. Again, I love your style of how the Chupacabra looks likes. I'm more into this style instead of the alien one.

I find that the canine style is a little more realistic than the alien one, but who am I to judge?
The Chupacabra is quite an interesting creature, I would love to live in an area that is strong with their presence, but I'm no where near.
And thanks. <3

Your welcome. Most of the time, I seen Chupacabra pictures and they're usually a mix between canine or alien like. I'm more used to watching canine version, so it might be the reason I like it more than alien like. But the t-shirt me and my mom had was alien like. Oh well.
Living somewhere near the Chupacabra is mostly seen is pretty disturbing and yet exciting in some strange, weird way. I used to remember how scared I was to sleep on my own in my room because I was afraid that the Chupacabra was going to break through my window and attack me. XD

How about a dead goat for the background? As well the actual Chupacabra that you made seems quite impractical if you consider realism. If you were to classify the Chupacabra as a predator and canine, this means that it has no need for defenses since it is the one doing the hunting. So if it were to have spikes protruding from it's back by any means, it would be either the actual spinal column almost emerging from the stretched skin or a line of upright hair running down the spine, only prey like the porcupine require spikes as they are used to deter predators. Additionally the color green is a very unnatural color for any non-scaled species and as such would be more realistically conveyed in earthy colors like blacks, grays, or browns since it is a nocturnal creature. Other than those two things this drawing is very well done and makes a great artists interpretation of a chupacabra if not a bit fictional. The reason I say this is that although I am uncertain whether cryptids are real or not the matter stands that they are creatures believed to actually exist in real life and as such are forced to follow the same rules of evolution all other animals have followed on earth, when drawing one you should try to see it more as creating your own new animal set with a hand full of guide lines rather than picking the coolest parts of over exaggerated descriptions and illustrations. Does any of that make sense?

LuxDani In reply to TheWaveWrider [2009-07-29 22:00:02 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much for your opinion.
I definitely see the impracticalities of it, but it's in my nature to make things seem a little more unnatural. And while researching the Chupacabra I collected tons of different ways that the creature was described as, and kind of chose the ones I found most appealing.
The last part of your comment, the part about that it should actually somewhat follow the guidelines of evolution and such. I guess I had that in my head while designing and painting my version of this particular cryptid (though admittedly, I strayed a bit), because I unconsciously chose the more realistic descriptions. I've read some that say it is an alien creature, both in the ways that it looks and what it known about it. Bounces like a kangaroo, leaves a sulfur scented trail...
One thing though, that I wish now that I hadn't done back then, was add a glow to those eyes. In the fantasy world, fine, but if this thing does happen to exist I doubt that it can actually have functioning eyes that glow. Seems a bit farfetched.

TheWaveWrider In reply to LuxDani [2009-07-30 03:45:22 +0000 UTC]
Not necessarily, when encountered in darker atmospheres animals such as cats, dogs or most other mammals seem to possess glowing eyes due to the way trace amounts of light reflect over their surface, thusly I could believe that such an image of the eyes could be conceived. My only issue with them is that maybe the red should be a more mellowed shade (orangish-red perhaps?) to anchor it close enough with the common eye pigmentation of other canine animals. As well the ideas of it bouncing like a kangaroo and smelling of sulfur are both scientifically doable if approached in the right manner.
Anyway, I am grateful to see that you bothered tending to my statement and hope I don't seem too forward.

I thought about the tendency for animal eyes to reflect the light seconds after I sent the comment. X|
I think it's good that there are still some people out here that are willing to give a good, constructive comment without being super offensive. A lot of people these days are just plain rude. Your comment was helpful, and it got me thinking about things, and how I could have improved.

That's amazing! It almost looks like you took a photo of the thing! It almost looks peaceful! The colors, the claws, the backround, the spikes- it looks so realistic and beautiful! However, I believe it would be more humanlike in appearence. It looks so smooth!
I've recently taken a large interest in cryptids myself. I'm actually thinking of writing a book about a world where all the inhabitants are cryptids and humans are the myths. I have a few character drawings in my gallery if you're interested

Haha, everytime I see this deviation of mine, I'm rushed with a feeling that I should do more cryptids. They're so much fun to do, and the fact that the topic is slightly controversial makes me want to do it even more. I just need more time. D=
When I do get around to it, have any suggestions of what I should do? I want to do a Bunyip for sure but after that I'm not sure.
Wow, seriously, that is one of the neatest concepts for a book that I've heard for a really long time. If you ever get around to writing that, I will definitely read it.

I heard that the Chupacabra actually attacked someone recently!
Apparently she was going to the outhouse when the chupacabra showed up.
She was rushed to the hospital when her husband found her. She had three straight claw marks on her hands and back. The paramedic who brought her to the hospital said that he had never,in all of his experience, seen wounds like that heal so quickly.
What do you guys think about it? You can find the interview with her and the paramedic on youtube.

VeRy AcCuRaTe, according to research i've done( internet wise of course). Beside Nessie, one of my favourit criptids. TO ALL SKEPTICS, SCIENCE IS STILL UNCOVERING OUR WORLDS SECRETS, PEICE BY PEICE, WHICH STILL KEEPS THE CRYPTIDS BELEIFE STRONG AND ALIVE. SADLY, IT IT IS DISCOVERED, IT WILL BE CLASSIFIED AS ANOTHER ANIMAL, AND WILL SONN BE OVERLOOKED. The joy of beleiving in cryptids is not knowing the truth, but yearning the truth. It amaizes me how one can want something, but at the same time would decline that something if it was offered to him of her.

I agree about the whole science thing. And about how if/when they are finalized as a species, they will just become another overlooked species. Pretty sad.
But its that sort of thing that fills me with joy. I love thinking that the human race, although we may think we are the rulers of this planet and know every secret about it, we don't. We just don't know what this planet really inhabits.
But yes, some of the cryptids may seem a little...far-fetched, but for the most part, why can't they exist? Just because people think that they are fakes because the only photographs of them may be poor quality or in short quantity doesn't mean they don't exist. Look at some other creatures for example. In some parts of the world (my own province for one), people were considered liars when they claimed that they saw a rare species, one that normally wouldn't be spotted in that particular area. Where I live, the mountain lion was considered somewhat of a cryptid because there was only one photograph taken of one of the species. But it has been proven that they do live in the area, though photographs are still in very short numbers.
Overall I think people just push away from believing because of the fact that there might be something out there that we don't know about. They'd rather remain at the top, all high and mighty (yeah, right), than agree that there is something else out there.
Apparently cryptids are a favorite subject to talk about for me.

Apart from the spikes on the back, this looks very very much like an animal that lives in my backyard (it's a wildlife reservation). We all call him "Rex", and he seems to enjoy dog food more than meat.

Well, one was nearly as scary as your drawing (I mean that in the best way. As in, it's scary but really awesome). But it was sick, brought us this pup, and then died in the woods. The pup is now several months old and kinda spooky looking, but seems healthy and happy. I believe it to be some kind of canid mix. Maybe a mix between a jackal and something, but there is something vaguely reptillian and marsupial-like about it as well. Nice little creepy thing though. I was nearly able to pet him once.
