Description Wow, two submissions in one day.

Man, do I ever love cryptids. Creatures that may or may not exist. Such as the chupacabra, bigfoot, or the Loch Ness, to name a few.
I want to get into cryptozoology.

The Chupacabra, translated to "Goat sucker", is often described as a reptilian looking canine with a forked tongue and long spikes sticking out of its spine. It is extremely thin, and has exaggerated claws and teeth. Hairless and can be scaly, it also has eyes that emit a faint red glow.
There is another appearance, alien like creature, but that didn't appeal to me quite as much.

So here's my interpretation of a Chupacabra. I think I leaned a little too much towards that canine side, much to my dismay. But I still like the result.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can add in the background. Its lacking something.

Someone should start a club that is all about cryptozoology. I would join.

Here's a close up of its face: i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii…

Same here. I have some blurry photos of it from a night camera, and my Grandma has some undeveloped ones on her camera. I'll ask her about them again and see if I can't post them.

Will do! And I just put you on devwatch, so that I can remember your name and stuff. I also have a chracter based on the critter from my yard, who I'm going to be drawing and posting soon.

Very good work, I'm a bit of a chupacabra connoisseur (which entails me enjoying seeing depictions of it) and this is one of the better I've seen, and I say this simply for the muscle work on it, the skeletal structure feels very real. I have always thought a canine-esque incarnation is the most likely to be real, considering the evidence, the dead animals and the manner in which they died. In summation, very cool picture, very nice work.

I agree, the canine version is more realistic and believable in my opinion. It just seems like the chances that it could exist are higher than this alien critter that looks slightly like a kangaroo.
And thankyou <3

veinsrunempty In reply to LuxDani [2008-12-22 03:14:33 +0000 UTC]

The kangaroo one is bizarre....but nothing will ever beat.... the BAT chupacabra...literally, a six foot tall winged beast with a coyote's face and a thick, hairy body...hilarious. Utterly and completely impractical, something with that body structure could never, ever fly...ah, too funny, too funny.

Looks really great, especially the taut skin contours. I know that the spines are a 'known' chupacabra feature but it takes away from the realistic feel you've got going on. I

AHHH my bad. posted before I was finished. As I was saying- I don't think you made it too caninish, it's actually perfectly proportional in my opinion.

You've probably seen this already no doubt, but this is how imagine they'd look like if they happened to exist: [link]

Wow, what a great medium between the alien - like appearance and the canine - like appearance. I personally think that people think that the chupacabra looks alien, beause maybe sometimes it stands on its hind legs to get a good look-see?

This is my favorite cryptids. I have a secret obession with them, it's interesting to see how different people interpret creatures that may or may not exist.

Such a wonderful concept, those cryptids.
One of my interests. And as I've recently discovered, one of my dad's too. We've had lengthy conversations about them, and came across a new video of a chupacabra claim on Youtube.

That's actually pretty intresting. The short front legs that it has incorperates the alien-like version of the chupacabra, although from behind it looks like a typical canine.

I once heard somewhere that scientest believe the chupacabra is a pack(?!) of mutated wild dogs that have a thirst for blood. I for one believe that it is Canine in apearance and I like haw you made it look. To me it looks sad/misunderstood. Its both cool and wierd how they literaly suck various creatures dry of thier blood with only a few small puncture wounds. Anyway I was searching the site for a chupacabra I liked and this one took the cake (or maybe the goat) definately a Fav.

Woah, too cool!
I can totally see that as being a promo poster for a Chupacabra-based film. A producer should give it a try, might be neat.

You've got a wicked gallery by the way. I really enjoyed looking through it. Some stuff is so creepy and cool! I love that kind of stuff.

The first description I read said that it looked like a dog. From then I couldn't get that representation out of my head.
But the way I drew this isn't how I actually see it. I do see it more as an alien-reptile cross thing.

For one, I *love* what you've done here! Even though the chupacabra technically may not be quite as canine as you've depicted, I prefer the interpretation that it *is* more canine-ish.

And on another note, about wanting to get into cryptozoology, I'm actually kind of heading towards that path maybe myself. Officially, I'm going into animal behavior, because cryptozoology is widely frowned upon in the scientific community, and if you start out there you're looked upon as a crock and no one will ever take you seriously.

Back on topic, I love the drawing! The anatomy's pretty accurate, except for a few spots like the chest and the front legs kinda, and I LOVE the ridges you gave him, especially on the neck, and (whoo for run-on sentences) I LOVE LOVE LOVE the head! Over all it's just... awesome! Fave, all the way!

LuxDani In reply to Anasilen [2008-01-29 17:27:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the lovely comment.

Yeah, cryptozoology is frowned upon because there is no real evidence in most cases but it interests me nevertheless. I don't think I would pursue business in that field but its pretty neat. I think I'll just stick with drawing the creatures. X]

And thanks for the favorite too.

The lightning looks good, and so does the creature! I never heard of this creature, though I know a lot of them, I agree they're fascinating. *ever heard of the 'dragon of Joppa'?, it's cool* Why is it called: 'Goat sucker'?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LuxDani In reply to Daktari92 [2008-01-09 23:05:08 +0000 UTC]

It was told that they were called "goat suckers" because they would kill many goats. They would drain their blood from their neck or head, leaving only one or two small holes.

Mm, never heard of it actually. I'll have to take a peek at it when I have more time.

And thankyar.

Huh, your version of the Chupacabra is much different from how I've imagined it, though looks very very scary.

I'm not entirely sure what you could add in the background. My first thought was possibly a trail of blood or wool from a sheep.

No crits for this.

The first cryptid I've ever heard of was the precious Chupacabra.
And it was through a WB11 kids show. |D;

It was through that old, Jackie Chan's Adventures or something. They go around kicking evil butt and stuff, using exorcism and...stuff. They came across a chubacabra incident and had to feed it GLOWING GREEN VEGETATION to stop it D:
Or it would've killed all the goats. c8

Ah, main point. D:
The chupacabra always came to my mind as a...spidery, less canine-ish thing. A bit more to the side of lion/bug/gross alien kind of creature.
But individual depictions are more interesting than the traditional stories, neh? <3

I love all the little elements you added into this piece...
His hide has the effects of the Basset hound-kinda droopy, loose skin that looks two sizes too big for it's owner.

Creature designers love using that strong, heavyset body vs lean, thin yet powerful legs contrast. It gives the subject here ( let's call him Chu for now. Spelling it out gives me cramps D: ) Chu a very omg ima eet sum sheep lol effect. |D;

The spines are simple yet kinda...complete the doggish/canine-ish Chu here. At least it's better than a huge sail of dinosaur skin.

I'm never awed at how patient you can be at detailing your works-you got the light source down and you even added the shadows the spines play across Chu's back! <3

The only critique is that the clouds closest to the moon seem a bit odd and standoffish. Maybe you forgot to blur it, but you can clearly see the brush strokes when it's full view and I'm like "EEEEEEF WUT ARE THOSE".

The detract a bit from the picture, but not much.

It's sooo good to write a long comment again.

AND even more so with a beautiful picture. Haven't seen one in two days!
I've been flooded with nothing but anime...which is good occasionally, but not at an extent.
