Description Behold, one of the greatest Gods, the God of the Underworld!
Anubis, also called Inpu or Imeut, the jackal-headed God, Judge of the Heart, and all that jazz.
And Amut (or Ammit), Eater of the Dead. Head of a crocodile, torso of a leopard (apparently I didn't feel like doing spots) and the hindquarters of a hippo, which makes for one awkward looking beast. She sits beneath the Scales of Justice and gets to feed on the "bad" souls. Delicious.

Not totally pleased with how this came out, but I worked it for probably around 12 hours, here and there. I'm very pleased with how the gold pieces came out, the face and the composition of it all.

Some good constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.
I hope you all enjoy.
Uggh my allergies make my head want to explode..
An' full view for much bigger.

It looks amazing, I especially like how you added Amut. I simply loved Egyptology when I was just a kid, I really appreciated the gory history behind embombing and all that stuff. I even named my cat Anubis because I just loved the God of the Underworld, he is awesome!

Wow, my comment-answering's lateness is EPIC.

Aw, thanks so much! Its so much more enjoyable to paint something that you enjoy.

I agree, I'm a writer and it's always fun to write stories I want to read.

Keep up the good work!

Gaaah! I really admire your patience. You always seem to work pictures until they've a full background, and there's no not-used spot left (toomuchdetails0.0). Amazing, my friend I love the head of Anubis, with the golden eyes and beautiful blue...string-thingies The only critic I've is about the place where the *grabs dictionary* ...balance(?) is.
Because it seems as if the road that leads to it goes drastically down at the end. Kinda like you'd slide off it if you arrive. I hate perspective myself, I screw up every time. But anyway, that was about the critic I had. The balance itself is awesome btw, especially the lightning, coming from behind, and I think you captured the 'underworld-feeling' really well. And I like how Amut comes creeping out of the shades, ready to devour some souls *muahahaha* Great job!

For this picture, I actually really like how you did Anubis. The eyes are done very sleek, ears are accurately huge, snout is long and lean, and the hands are very well done. These are probably your best hands so far.

Now for the chest, I'm really glad you remembered it's a six pack, but they seem to be a little close in. You could make them a little larger so that his waist isn't as high up. Here, I found a fun tutorial (in my inspiration box again ^^) of the abdominal: [link] You see how goat boy there his flexin'? The muscles are closer together as you drew them when the person is bending over. You see?

The neck's a little muscular, but is all good. It's really the neck jewelry that's getting me at the moment. You show the front of him with the jewelry really nicely, but there should be some overlap if not ridges of the jewelry on his shoulders as well. Where did they disappear? Arm band and staff are very well done. The symbol hanging off the staff could be a little straighter (not so many bumps), but it's metal so I'm not entirely sure what look you're going for. You have the lighting down, now it's just a matter of smoothing your coloring skills.

Love the flames, love the lighting, love love love the background. The scale as well as the cracked walls are very well done, you added just enough dark colors in them to give them depth and shape. Awesome work - keep it up!!

Amut is the only thing that doesn't fit well in the picture. The nostrils are a little too large and the eyes are at a good angle, but too close to each other. If you take a look at an alligator's head straight on" , you'll notice you can barely see the nostrils (it's as if they're not there). As for teeth and tip of the nose, you'll notice the nose is very blunt and their teeth in the front are very few and very tiny. All of the teeth are located on the sides of the mouth. Here's a good side view picture to show you how the teeth look. Also a quick comment about the eyes, most alligator eyes are very dark and very rarely ever show white. To add onto that, their most common eye color is a dark brown (shown best in the side view photo). You notice how the eye is shaped and that the pupil is round? So there's something to keep in mind. Don't worry, very dark eyes that show no white can give off the same horrific effect as slit pupils.

The rest of the picture of Amut is a little too dark for me to critique. The forepaws I can see, but am not sure whether that's of an alligator, leopard, or hippo. So I can't help you much with that. Besides which, awesome work. My favorite of this piece would have to be Anubis mainly because you've got his features down and the face is drawn very sleek (love the head the most). Keep it up!

Haha, I'll have to study that anatomy tutorial. x]

I try really hard on the lighting in most of my images, so I'm glad its appreciated. <3

Ugh..I'm not pleased with Amut at all. I was contemplating just totally getting rid of her but I found that the area looked very empty.
I didn't spend nearly as much time on her as I did the rest of the image, so I could improve on her greatly. Alligators aren't really my strength, but I'm going to try and improve on them.

Awesome. I think you could do especially well with reptiles if you practice with them because of your style. You have a tendency to draw a lot of pictures that are fierce and horrifying or if not that very dark, and you're good at those.

Wow.

The realism is crazy. Although I'm usually loving a superbrightinyourface light source, the lighting in this has been so beautifully done. I love the kind of mood it sets - dark and sinister. Perfect.

I adore all the details, you've really worked on every single little piece of this picture - and it shows. I too love the gold, it usually would shine more, but in this lighting? You've done it wonderfully. :3

Composition = super amazing and sexy and everything.

I WISH I HAD TIME TO SAY MORE. ~

LOL I WANT THAT STAFF. |:<

-steals the whole thing and runs away-

Dude. Kodes.

Stop. Being. So. Awesome.

Actually, no don't stop. Because if you stop, then I can't see all your beautiful artwork. Forget what I said earlier. Nyehehehe.

Anyways, I was reading =thunderfox5 's comment about the lighting. I agree. Although it could be more stronger (fire is a very strong source of light), your lighting in this is very...superb. Yes, superb.
Your compositioning (that's not a word, I knew it) skills are great. The way it all blends together nicely...the only thing I have to say is that, perhaps it's just a bit too close together. You see the end of Anubis' staff, right? When you look at it, you also see miss Amut there. Your eyes kinda get a bit confused since they're close together enough for you to see them, but not enough to see both completely. If you had made the file wider and put (maybe) seventy-five more pixels between the staff and Amut, it would be perfect.
Oh, but it's very fine as it. The cracks in the structure behind -or holding- the massive scale are just amazing. Like I could run my hand along the edges and feel the texture of it. Which reminds me that you did a very good job on portraying the texture of the material of the structure. Kinda like a...ceramic-ish, baked mud. Wow. <3

Great, great work on this, Kodes. I give you three thumbs up.

On the note of gods, however, my favorite would have to be Poseidon. God of horses and the ocean, ftw. xD
Er...I don't have a favorite Egyptian god. They're all so cool and diverse...

The background texture is excellent, as is the fire and general mood. It seems very dark in a damp yet slightly serene way, though there's definite apprehension (I would want to be within thirty feet of Amut!).

The gold, as you said, is excellent. It seems like I could reach out and touch it.

The only thing that could use a little work is Anubis' face, though perhaps the lack of definition there was intentional (to make him seem more mysterious/ominous/godly?).

..... I freaking love the scales and the stone, though. Eye candy, it is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LuxDani In reply to Supaslim [2008-09-17 15:15:58 +0000 UTC]

Haha, being within thirty feet of Amut might result in the lack of a limb or two. I'm sure its not just bad souls that she feeds on. xP

When doing Anubis's face, I wanted to keep it a bit almost like a mask. Obviously, its quite unnatural to have an actual jackal-headed human so I didn't want to make his face seem totally real.

Thanks. <3

SWEET McBEANZ

LOVE the lighting/atmosphere of the pic! The reflective lighting on Anubis' staff is just lovely 8D
andand the texture of the wall is pretty awesome ^^ did you overlay a texture, or is that brushwork or did you add noise to it or somethin else? (hurhur I'm curious xD)
AAANNNDD I love how your eye travels through the whole piece.. it's like first you see Anubis, then the staff/scales, then you're all "OH WHATS DAT IN THA SHADOWZ DER.. AAHHH AMUT YOU SNEAKY FOO'!" eheh xD
