Description
I'm so glad this thing is done, I just need to get it out of the house now.Put about 30 hours into this thing and I know I can put at least another 15 into the background.
But because this is a commission (for a friend of the family), and I'm fairly new to the whole commissioning thing, I haven't the slightest idea what I'm being paid for it, so I'm not putting one more hour into it. 'Cause I probably won't be getting paid for it.
Whaaateva.
This is painted on a HUGE freaking circular sawblade. 38 inches across. HUGE. Area of just over 900 square inches.

I'm sooo happy to see new work from you! Your drawings always look familiar, because I recognize your style, but they still surprise me every time. Great work on this one, it looks like a lot of work. Especially the background and the moose' body. I keep staring at his face, it's so.. alive. And I'm really envious of the way you combine detail with a proper-looking lightning. I always loose sight of the overall light/dark if I concentrate on the details and vice versa.
I've been doing a lot of free promotional pieces as well, but that didn't work out too good, because two out of three people took the piece before I could make a proper picture of it for my portfolio. One got send out as part of a competition, so it's lost, but luckily I can get my hands on a picture of the second one. So, bit of a pickle, but I'll manage and I have good hopes that I'll get more commissions in the future
Btw Kodes, how are you doing? I miss talking to you. I have been really busy with Uni, just like you, so interaction through deviantART is getting less and less. I kinda miss the old days when I was really active on here, but I'm very happy with my current life style too, and I'm still drawing a lot. Expect a mass update of deviations soon, when I get around scanning and uploading them all. So, have you read any good books lately (can be school or recreation)?Movies? Interesting activities? Awesome people?
P.S. What do you think of Jennifer Lawrence being cast to play Katniss?

Wow, this is amazing! You put so much detail into it. The fur and colors look beautiful and very realistic. Great job!

Thankyou! Usually when you work on such a huge scale it means that you don't have to put in so much detail because it'll usually be viewed at a distance, but that is soooo not my style. xD

Oh my word...this is simply amazing! I am really blown away by how realistic and detailed the painting itself is, and the fact that it was painted on a sawblade makes it all the more incredible. Nicely done!

Haha why thankyou!
So many people are impressed that its on a blade, and it looks pretty neat in real life. Not something you would expect as an art canvas, that's for sure.

Sure thing!
I have seen one other art piece done on a sawblade...to be sure, it is a very interesting canvass to work on!

Oh my gosh...I thought this was a photograph of a real moose and even looking at it up close it still looks like one!! Your skill with lighting and realism is absolutely awe inspiring!
I hope whoever commission this can appreciate your incredible talent. Not only is this piece unique in the choice of canvas it was applied to (A saw blade? That is about the most wicked thing ever!) but the paint work itself is beyond incredible! I love the moose's face. So pretty and gentle looking. The fur looks one hundred percent real and those antlers are just beautiful especially with those deep shadows over them. On that note, as I said earlier the lighting is just incredible and really gives that piece its extra bit of realism. I am not an artist that understands light yet and I am not alone in that as many struggle with it and so when I see a rare artist that does, such as yourself, I am so impressed and inspired.
I hope you let your client know how much time was put into this. I have done pieces for people with this much time in them that I received less than a hundred dollars for and I am not even half as good as you. This is worth so much and I really hope you get what you deserve.

Thanks honey, this comment made me feel all warm and gooey inside.
I suppose I pay extra attention to lighting because I know that it can make or break a painting. Dramatic lighting makes everything look more appealing and interesting, but it can be very hard to pull off. I'm still a fresh amateur when it comes to making stuff up, like where light should fall, where shadows go and how deep/dark they should be...very hard. But observing the world around you is the best place to start!

This is beautiful! You always paint on the neatest things There's a saw themed restaurant in my area that would kill for something like this!
About the pricing ... Please, please do not sell yourself short when it comes to commissioned works like this. If you feel that the hours spent of this picture were well spent, then let your commissioner know. Despite any reservations you might have about bringing this up, people who pay for art usually have a good sense about how much a piece is worth.

Thanks love!
Mm see I'm in a bad situation, and its my mistake. I'm thinking that I'm going to get something around the $300 range, which is totally not worth my time but at this point I'll just take whatever I can get and leave it at that.

You're very welcome
I've made the same mistake before and its not the end of the world.
Sometimes the publicity a piece gets can make up for the loss (and with your track record, you're bound to reap the rewards for your efforts!)
Just keep making stuff, be conscientious, and have fun with it!

Mmhmm that's why I'm not particularly bugged about it, I know the client quite well and I know he'll boast about it and give my name. Hopefully it'll benefit me in the long run.
