Description
Saw the most beautiful stock photo by SalsolaStock and I just knew I had to paint it. luxdani.deviantart.com/art/Fla…It was surprisingly difficult to paint, I re-did areas an annoying amount of times. Those orange feathers on the back were KILLER.
But I'm pretty happy with the result. I think I'll re-photograph it tomorrow during the day time, get some nicer natural lighting to bring out the colours. They're pretty close here, but I want them exact.
I gave myself a challenge this time, to not use black. At all. I left the black in my drawer. All of the "black" you see in the painting is mostly made with red, dark blue and dark brown. At first it was a lovely purple colour, but as I layered it it got darker and darker. And honestly, it looks pretty damn black in real life too. I tried mixing some other colours in there, like green but I hated the way it looked. Kind of went with a sunset palette here. C:
I hope you folks enjoy this! Feedback is hugely appreciated, as always. You guys rock

but how do you get it that dark without using black? Do you keep black for mixing only or what?

For that painting I literally did not even open my tube of black paint. By mixing red, blue and dark brown I was able to get a super dark purple-brown Colour that actually looks nearly black.

This is very pretty I love the use of colours. I once heard you should never use black in paintings. I do not know if that is true, but I can see it was a really usefull challenge for you. Maybe the not using of black made the bird and the background more a unity since you used a lot of the same kind of colours

I've heard the same thing too but hadn't really ever applied it to my work. I'm really glad that I tried it though, I think I may end up abandoning black almost completely.
Plus it's a good learning experience.

Wow, no black?! I bet that really makes a difference seeing it in person. Lots of drama.

This is amazing! The amount of detail is stunning, especially the rich colors of the feathers (enhanced by your almost black background) and the water.

Thanks!
I've been there, done that, so this time I was smart and painted the dark colours around the bird, instead of painting the entire canvas dark first. It made a world of difference.
