Description
Hi there. I present you my tutorial. I thought that the technique of Typography Portrait is quite obvious, but since there are so many people asking about that, it's better to make a tutorial.Pardon my imperfect english.
Enjoy!

Thank you. Path tool is hard to handle from the beginning (when I started I was really afraid of it.. I just didn't understant that crazy tool). But after some practise you'll do just fine.

I believe you can do the same or even better than my typography portraits. Just go through my tutorial, follow the steps and most importantly - be patient, then you make something amazing.

Hi! You're very welcome, I'm glad it helped you. Thanks for sharing your result, it looks great, you did very good job. If I may suggest one thing - darken the background and the real colors (from photograph) will look better. Try it and you'll see.. the darker the background is, the better, because the background color is leaking through the gapes between the words and affects the typography. But of course it's up to you, it looks amazing as it is.

lVlorf3us In reply to Aluciel286 [2012-08-28 23:20:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, I don't know either. Where's the problem exactly? I assume you make your curve with path tool. Then, maybe, you somehow click wrong with the text tool. You have to move your cursor on the curve so you can see that the icon of the cursor changes (you'll see letter T and curve above or under it). And then you click and you write on the curve. Editing text (words, letters) is quite easy (changing size etc.), so I don't see any problem here. Just try it once again and I hope it'll go better now. Good luck, I believe you'll manage it somehow.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial its really awesome, but I'm having problems with colouring the words. I agree that using masks is a much simpler and better idea, but I don't quite understand what you mean when you say:
"After that hide the original text layer and leave visible only the new merged one. Now make a selection of the merged layer, click on the base picture and duplicate (CTRL+J). Now just hide the merged layer, put some background beneath the duplicated layer and thats it"
I merged all the text layers together, and then got stuck :S Sorry, you explained it perfectly, its just I'm not so great at this
tutorial is awesome though!

Hi! You're welcome! Thanks for watch and badge and of course for your comment too. Well, it's simple. If you merged it, just select the merged-text-area (ctrl + click on the layer thubnail in layers panel). Once you have the selection, click on the base-picture layer, and duplicate (CTRL+J) the selection from that layer and you get new layer with the same area as the merged area (it means area with text) but now, because it's duplicated from the photograph, it's colored with the exact colors you need, so you hide everything else but the new duplicated layer and you're there! I hope you understand it now, I don't know how could I explain it better. Thanks again for your appreciation!

I have a couple of questions, if that's ok.
How many words do you normally use in a portrait?
How possible do you think it would be to do a portrait like this in a 10 hour exam? I'd love to do something like this for my graphics exam, but I'm not sure whether I'd be able to fit it in.
Also, how much practice would I need to do before doing this in an exam? I've never done anything like this, apart from some very basic typography.
Thanks for the tutorial, it's really great!

lVlorf3us In reply to serafine-enifares [2012-02-11 16:35:44 +0000 UTC]
Hi! Thanks for comment.
Ok, how many words? It's really hard to tell. This particular portrait has 380 layers and minimally 100 of them are the hair layers, where I repeated her name over and over. The rest of it is her filmography, biography, quotes etc. .. and I think I didn't use anything twice this time, so there might be about 1640 words.
Next question. 10 hours is really ok. This portrait took me 7 hours (my Cylon portrait took 6 hours), so it's really enough time to do this. The bigger font you use, the faster it's done. No need to do is as detailed as I did my Scarlett portrait (about 1200 layers, 32 hours of work).
Next question. You need to know, how to use Pen tool for sure [making curves, then click on it with text tool, paste the text on the curve and adjust the width / size of it so it fits. It's mechanical work, you'll do it automatically. The only, non-automaticall thing about it is that you need to work with the text and in every new layer, logically, you must continue the sentence from where it ended in the previous layer. So you'll be just ALT-TABing between photoshop and notepad, or wherever you have your text, and copy it. My shortcut is to insert loads of text into one layer and when I duplicate it, edit the curve with the pen tool, I just delete the sentence that is visible in the previous layer and the next sentence become visible right in that second without worrying about copying it.
Oh, one more thing I found out last week and what is the most time-consuming thing about making these portraits: when you have more curves and you make new one and you want to click on it with a text tool, there's like 50% chance you won't be able to, because it automaticcaly click on some existing text layer that is next to your new layer. So I always had to click on some layers and make them unvisible so I can make a new one. And here's the tip: if you make your curve and choose the Text Tool, then hold down SHIFT and click on the curve. It forces it to make a new layer so you can't click on anything else. If I knew this before, I'd save about 20% time on every single portrait.
Sorry for the long text. Long story cut short - it's absolutelly doable and possible to make it within 10 hours. You just need to know how to use pen tool (at least making the curve.. click on the start, click on the end, then add some anchor points on the curve and drag them and adjust the radius about them.. just basic stuff) and Text tool (not a big deal, just click on the curve and then, in Text window, just adjust the width / size) and I think that's it. In the end you need to mask it, as it is in the tutorial and you're done!
I wish you good luck with that and if you finish it, I'd love to see the outcome.

Thanks for such a detailed reply!
I think the reason I wanted to know how many words it was is because I was wondering if I would have time to write something myself, because it would be a great thing to show in the development. I think around 1000 words would be fine, we have 10 weeks of preparation time before the final exam, so that shouldn't be too difficult (I think I just jinxed myself :/)
I'm thinking that I have enough experience in Photoshop that of I needed to, I could launch into doing it right now. I've used the pen tool loads before now, and the text tool is like second nature to me (I've done quite a few posters with awkward text)
Thanks for the tip on getting text on a new layer, I've had similar problems on different things before.
I will make sure to upload it when I'm done, and even if I end up doing a different method for my final exam, this has been very helpful, and I am planning to do some typography portraits anyway. I'll make sure to credit you for the help!

lVlorf3us In reply to serafine-enifares [2012-02-11 18:03:35 +0000 UTC]
You're very welcome. I'm here for help.
If you have 10 weeks for preparation, it's plenty of time. You can write some text in a few hours and then you're ready for Photoshop. I think it's maybe better, if you use your own text, it's more.. authentic and it gives you much more freedom than working with somebody else's text.
Well, I think you're experienced enough. It just seems difficult, but it really isn't.
So once again - good luck with that, I believe it's gonna be piece of cake, it just takes some time.
