Are these meant to be comic book abs? I only ask because they're not that realistic.

More comic book style, it's just a break down real quick, it was just to show a real quick way to map out where to put abs...the anatomys not correct at all. If I had known it was gonna get this out of hand I would have tried to make it accurate =_=

Sorry. I didn't mean to sound insulting. I just wanted to be sure of what style you were going for, that's all. This IS a good tutorial BTW. It's got that "fusion" look of both American and Japanese styles.

!!!!!! No no, you weren't rude, sorry. I sounded rather harsh myself, I'm not really good at replying. But you have a very keen eye, I'm a fan of both styles.

meh. the pecs are entirely too small and there's no real indication of the abdominal arch. also the red line is entirely misplaced. the only line like that would be drawn where the obliques meet the pelvis. the top of the torso also looks entirely too flat for any kind of ribcage to be there. overall it's very poor in terms of the anatomical understanding conveyed. The lines here are seemingly somewhat random rather than being used to convey the underlying structures. all in all I don't really think you should be doing tutorials on this subject. It could instill some very bad habits in the deviantartists who actually think that this is a proper way to do it.

First off this wasn't made to be a proper tutorial, this was in reply to a friend who wanted to know how I do it so quickly, so I threw this together, it's just showing my thought process, not saying anywhere its anatomically correct, this is just how I sketch ideas out.

pacifistcharr In reply to lwyn [2013-09-10 05:25:19 +0000 UTC]
even still.
A. you're presenting it as a tutorial
B. you're presenting a tutorial on anatomy even when you really don't seem to have an understanding of it yourself
C.even if it's just to get ideas out, it's bad habits pure and simple. especially if you're defaulting to this kind of stuff for practice.
D. "not saying anywhere its anatomically correct" the whole you presenting it as a tutorial on how to construct a torso severely implies that you do think it's anatomically correct, and if it's not, why make a tutorial on something you're not familiar with?
I'm sorry if I seem rude but it really irks me when people present bad tutorials like this as other deviant artists will often use it and adopt those bad habits themselves. your best bet in understanding the torso would be to study anatomy. the better your understanding of the anatomy, the better your figure drawings will be. If you need anatomy reference then I would highly suggest the works of Gustave Dore

Gosh, you sure are getting yourself worked up, it is a quick sketch, and a good one at that, I've seen a few guys with that type of proportions, and I know anatomy quite well. Plus, it is how lwyn draws abs, not how a textbook draws abs. "how I draw abs" *shakes heas*

pacifistcharr In reply to maria-hope [2013-09-10 14:24:11 +0000 UTC]
" it is a quick sketch, and a good one at that" no it isn't. this is clearly being methodically constructed. also it's not a good one, in fact it's pretty bad. " I've seen a few guys with that type of proportions, and I know anatomy quite well." abs do not look like that, rib cages do not look like that. obliques do not look like that. somehow i doubt you understand anatomy very well. " it is how lwyn draws abs" then where are the actual abs? protip: they're not just a line down the middle of the torso.

maria-hope In reply to pacifistcharr [2013-09-11 10:35:51 +0000 UTC]
I know that they aren't just "a line down the middle of the torso" I have studied anatomy. People's rib cages are all different, mine is uneven, sounds weird but yeah. Oh and lwyn did do a good job, have you gotten a picture on the front? I think not. I haven't gotten one up there, but that's becauseΒ
A. I'm still working on my style.Β
And B. I'm always forgetting to upload stuff.
Be nice, it's better for you.Β

critique isn't about being nice. it's about seeing the flaws and pointing them out so the artist can improve. saying "well it was on the front page" means pretty much nothing to me as there is My Little Pony fanart that gets put on the front page.

You may see it as critiquing lwyn's work, but really, find something better to do! Critique is good. I like my work being critiqued but when you tirelessly destroy something someone has done that's not critiquing. don't try fix stuff that that you cant do either.Β
good bye.

"when you tirelessly destroy something someone has done that's not critiquing." I didn't destroy anything, I only pointed out the mistakes, which is what critiquing is.
"don't try fix stuff that that you cant do either. " clearly you are the expert on what I can and can't do.

Clue's in the description, mate: "I keep getting asked how I draw abs." She's tutoring people on how *she* draws abs. If it were actually being presented as a proper anatomy tutorial for study your criticisms would be valid. But it isn't, and so they aren't.
Awesome work, by the way lwyn!

"She's tutoring people on how *she* draws abs." but she shouldn't be as she can't do it well at all herself. "If it were actually being presented as a proper anatomy tutorial" but it is. Abs are anatomy. she is trying to tutor people on how to draw an anatomical structure.therefore she is treating it as an anatomy tutorial.

She's showing people how SHE draws an anatomical structure, upon several requests to do so. What part of that are you stuck on still?
