Description This is for Black Ink Horror issue #3, for the story Headcount by Tim Groome.

It's a charming little tale about ... well I don't want to ruin it for you, but I will say that it is full of zombies, has a great theme, and text with biting wit.
Tim gave me a lot of wonderful imagery to work with.

As you may or may not have noticed, I used a different shading technique for this one. I usually use crosshatching, but after studying the work of , , and , I decided to try my hand at stippling. Their galleries are amazing, if you haven't checked them out, do so. I can't stress that enough. I've been experimenting in the past few weeks and this is the first piece that I've felt good about. And even though it took me forever to do this piece, and I can't even count how many hand cramps I got, I am very excited about learning this new technique and putting it to use.

Also, I'm glad I finally got to explore my zombie fetish . I think you will be seeing a lot more zombie pieces from now on, since this piece has given me a lot of new ideas.

Again, the amount of details is breathtaking. I especially like the scope effect you created.

thanks! i've never drawn a gun before, so i'm not sure how accurate it is. thanks for taking a look!

Considering its angle, I think you did a good job. Maybe having made the gun a little rounder at its edges would have worked better, but it's nothing that bad to consider with such an angle.

This might just be my favorite piece of yours yet (and I'm an unabashed fan of your work). There are just so many different aspect of it that scream professionalism. Where to start...

First off, the point of view that you decided on--namely, the first-person view through the site of a gun--was brilliant. No better way to "draw" (no pun intended) your audience into the picture than to make THEM the ones actually about to blow away a hot zombie chick. An excellent technique that you utilize perfectly.

The picture also has so much depth, and you have several layers of activity in it. It's amazing how it draws your eye through the scope, then around to various zombie carnage around the main figure, and then to the billboard in the background. I can tell that you put some time into the composition.

I also love how you incorporated the stippling into your work. The smooth, natural textures you achieve with the technique do much to create a more organic feel to the plants and people. And, of course, the contrasts between the lights, darks, and midtones make certain that everything is clearly defined.

I could go on...LOL Honestly, it's nice to watch another artist who is so obviously trying to improve her craft (and certainly succeeding!). Incredible work.

Tom

wow, thank you so much for the detailed commments. i appreciate your taking such a close look at my work.

i'm actually kind of unhappy with the actual composition, something about the placement of the hand with the gun isn't quite right. I really wanted the girl zombie in the scope to be more of the focus, but i think the billboard kind of takes over.

thanks again for the wonderful comments!
