Description
Finally gotten out of this art block which ive had for a while, havent done anything good until now, guess it was the taste of using pastels again. These are Nankeen Kestrels (or more known as the Australian Kestrel) in what i tried to do a mahogany tree but looks more like a eucalyptus really, the leaves arn't dark enough to be a mahongany. Ive had this long piece of coloured carboard i knicked from the art store room at school **it was for art's sake so my intentions are pure** and i just didnt know what to put on it, and then i remembered this pair of collared sparrowhawks that nested in my uncle's tree that preyed on the willie wagtails, pigeons, lizards etc and decided to draw kestrels insted
too much stripes on sparrowhawks...

nankeen kestrels arn't the prettiest in the birds of prey world but i guess beauty isnt the all time surviour, exspecially in the dry habitat of australia, all browns and yellows. i like the american kestrel too, the orange and blue is gorgeous

Cute. You're right about the tree of course, but it is a lovely eucalyptus.

omg! love it. kestrels are so pretty and so small. they aren't as hardy as the red tail so they die very easily....so i don't see much of them around here. wish they woudl turn up more.
as usual its beautiful.

Nice! Great composition I probably would have let the branches come right out from the right edge of the board because right now it feels a tiny bit cramped with them cut off so close to the edge of the bird. But that's just me.
I love the simple design with the uncluttered background that's still able to keep the sense of space behind the birds and branches. Oh yeah really nice colour palette too ^^

ah i see what u mean, i wanted it to be centered kinda, thats why i didnt make the branches go all the way off the board but now its bothering me. im still fixing up bits such as the yellow eye ring of the left bird (i didnt shade it proper). i like using the browns and oranges, and it always is nice with green, brings the browns out nicely. thanks for the comment once again

This is so good, from the leaves to the birds. I like how you put the shade from the leaves on the right bird too. The bird on the left is a bit plain but it's cute and plump
*steals talent*

lol yesh, nice and plump (he is palin cos the picture i used as a reference was only just the head, and i couldnt leave that other kestrel all alone...im starting to get the hand of shadows and lighting, i hadnt tried it with pastels so i did, and im glad it was a success, was afraid it would kill it
haha you have no talent to steal, its hard work

Lol mmm he sounds tasty It's still well drawn though, better than a lot of stuff on here (DA)
Pastels seem so hard to use and you're drawing looks so effortless!
Lol, maybe both =3

i find them easier than pencils sometimes, tho its hard to do small stuff as u can notice i didnt do and small feathers, its just straight colour and shade. im disapainted with alot of stuff on DA, alot of it is like little kid scrbbles and vectors (im against tracings) and alot of that wolf art, which i admit is pretty, but everyone does it and its getting very cliche

Maybe you could try like filing the pastels down to a point or something for smaller details. There might be some tutorials on here Don't forget heaps of anthro and pictures of sleazy girls taking photos of themselves.

pastels break easily but i try to get them as sharp as possible (i use a sharpener, but they blunt quickly) lots of that self porn photograpthy here, all for the sake of "art" lol

Oh, we have Europeian versions of these around here. With grey heads.. Common Kestrel. But hardly ever I spot it, usually just hear it.

lol i just googled it and i think its pretty cute, well i think all kestrels are anyways, so small and fat looking hehe. i havent seen one of these in ages either, they live more out into the bushland than the city places where i live

i still have to attempt a full australian bush landscape with eucalyptus trees and paperbark etc, just the thing is im too scared...pastels smudge real easily so i think ill wait till im better till i do that i think the green brings out the orange borwn of the birds, even tho these birds nest in tree hollows...

you are too scared? mmm... well you have skills and imagination too do (draw) anything so if i where you i would try that no matter if it have mistakes, so i think that practicing is the best ways
yes i agree, that mix is really a bulls eye well sometimes you need to change surroundings to look better, i mean that is how i think lol

yes of course ill give it a go sometime. on tuesday im going to attempt to get some more of that card stuff from my art teacher (there is a real huge piece ive got my eyes on) and i plan on doing the landscape on that. oppisote colours are good to work with, tho i never like yellow and purple...
