Description
Yes, its a Bush Thick Knee or otherly known as the Bush Stone Curlew (i call them Stonned Curlews for various reasons).In Aboriginal culture, this bird is a symbol of death, and with a grumpy face like this one i can tell why lol.
There were a pair of these birds living in the carpark at my skool that had 2 chicks last year whith one disappering after a storm and the other leaving the nest as we suspect because he was pretty big and fully fledged. They were still here this year, but at the moment they arnt in their usual spot so i guess they left.
I dont think the background was the right colour, i think i should of done a similar colour to the curlew since it is a camoulflage bird, i just automatically thought green would be good since it harmonises with red colours, at least it matches its sleepy eye

I love curlews as well and shall draw more sooner or later, there is a family at the school i go to in the carpark under some bushes that ive been photograpthing for over a year, new chicks coming and going every few months. Its a shame how many curlews get hit by cars because of their slow take off and protectiveness to their chicks.

I know Thats why I crawl around our street .. honestly i will never go about 30ks just cus i'm terrified of hitting one. They dont really have "run!" build into their defences .. they either just crouch down to hide (!!) or run toward the car if they have chicks D: Thats amazing that they are at your school, i got the impression they were very shy birds
good to see they can trust the students

Well they are pretty hidden where they are, and they hiss when i get too close to take pictures but they are doing fine, i just hope no bad people discover them. I keep my foot hovering over the brakes all the time when driving out bush where they are mostly, the most ive hit are cane toads but ive been close to hitting owls and curlews because of their unpredictableness

once i thought i hit a snake, and i was completely horrified and turned around, so close to tears it wasnt funny, and then i pull over and find out its a stick ><"

Good thing you havent seen my uncle's driving, he swerves everywhere to hit the snakes, cats, frogs etc. where i slam the breaks on hard hoping they get out of the way so they dont hurt themselves or my car.

they are naturally cranky looking, but very docile as far as all the curlews i've met, can walk right up to them and all they do is lie down in their "camoulflage" pose until u go away, they dont hiss or chase u or anything like that. so glad i dont get magpies up here

yesh, we gets da plovers here, so much fun when riding a bike. they like to nest right next to the bike path and they watch you ride up to them and turn slightly to their direction and bam! dem swooping ya head or running very fast on those long legs away from the speeding bike coming towards them. yeah i kinda noticed the favs, as u get to the older stuff it looks like shit tho

yea they are nasty- and i agree, the sound like sea birds for sure. We have some nesting in the paddock about 15m from our fron door. its going to be just awesome when they decide to lay eggs and get all protective. >.< crazy bastards. They are fun to watch but, walking around on thier mega long legs with thier head stooped hah- shitty looking things, always in a bad mood! =]

OMG! I went to a zoo where they had these 2 weeks ago, we didnt know what it was and there was no info, but me and BF laughed about how grumpy it looked. I christened it an 'owl-duck' because it looked like a wading owl, lol. Im so glad I stumbled across yor gallery today XD
Youve done the feathers beautifully, it looks gorgeous ^_^

Talking of Rory, there's a thing on at the shed this Saturday - a dude's (Sid/Syd/Rhys/Reece) birthday party. It's like gold coin donation entry or something. Do you wanna go? I might not be in Darwin though, so I might have to miss it ;_;

Though that might just be for a particular Aboriginal country.
