Description Finally got to doing a tutorial, hopefully it is what anyone is looking for. Might not be the best drawing for a tutorial of my style but i think it might give you an idea of how i roll in the art mode.

Sorry if there are any spelling mistakes in there, i had troubles putting it together so hopefully its readable and understandable.

This is copyright to myself and purely myself as for the whole drawing including photo refs were done by me, please respect my art and dont copy, if you use this i'd love to know and see any results done by it, that doesnt mean you reproduce my work, unless you have my permission.

The variety of colour you can create with practically 100% coloured pencils is genius. What polychromos set do you have, just out of interest?

I had a set of 120 I think at first, then I just bought individual replacements for the colours I use up. Colour pencils are truly underrated really, especially since digital art hit the scene

Wow, this is just crazy! How long does it usually take to finish a work? And what size is this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LyrebirdJacki In reply to SpottedNymph [2009-12-01 05:05:54 +0000 UTC]

i must have spent over 40 hours on this drawing, i lost count at 32 hours but i had only got less then half the background in by then this is A3 so its pretty big, ill have to do more drawings like this when im feeling more paitent

SpottedNymph In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-12-01 06:48:21 +0000 UTC]

Wicked crazy! 40 hours? Hell, my longest piece was 12-13 hours. I envy your patience.

Thank you! That was very interesting and helpful to read. "Opposite with paints" <-- I have to remember that! >_<

I actually like the finished bird and flower alone as much as the finished work with bg. Maybe because the photo added a natural vignette around the paper so it doesn't look as blank. Amazing work though! (And he's not that ugly )

LyrebirdJacki In reply to Teru-teruMomiji [2009-10-04 11:30:51 +0000 UTC]

my nana kept telling me to do backgrounds first and i found by the time i got to the main picture at the front i noticed there were alot of mistakes such as parts accidently coloured over in the background, deatils such as fine fur/feather around the edges of the animal executed and only fixable with paints (which i suck at) and so on.

i like the flower kinda more than the bird (tho i like the bird cos its a bird ). The background was a try at the blur of a photograpth so im glad it came out pretty good.

im glad this was helpful anyway, and glad it was read right thru

Teru-teruMomiji In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-10-04 12:31:12 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I'd ever do the background first. Cos it acts like a balancing agent for the piece that you can use to fix the composition after doing the main subject. It's too difficult to do it the other way around.

LyrebirdJacki In reply to Teru-teruMomiji [2009-10-04 12:34:04 +0000 UTC]

well thats putting it simply besides, the backgrounds mostly are boring, and doing all the fun stuff first at least gives me motivation to get the background done to see how it looks

I'm trying to figure out realism in birds right now. It makes me appreciate this whole process more. It's quite tricky.

LyrebirdJacki In reply to mooing-duckerberry [2009-09-30 09:02:35 +0000 UTC]

well it isnt the best tutorial for birds in general, just the way i shade but ill have to definatly do a bird only tutorial with structures of wings and feather build etc if it sounds handy at all

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mooing-duckerberry In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-09-30 21:38:12 +0000 UTC]

I've got structure down just fine. It's the way it all fits, and all the little detils. Lay of the featers, how the colors change, all that little stuff. It's driving me nuts!

LyrebirdJacki In reply to mooing-duckerberry [2009-10-01 01:12:08 +0000 UTC]

well all the little stuff is what makes the birds look good good luck with it

By Faber Castell? I just got $50 for that Lorikeet, maybe I could use it for that.

LyrebirdJacki In reply to Diin-kun [2009-09-24 02:28:39 +0000 UTC]

oh what u already sold that painting? well you'll need nore than $50 to get a 36 set of them, they are like around $80 just for them if u dont know where to get them, you'll probably find that they are cheaper online than locally, however i might be wrong since brisbane is a bigger place then darwin and probably has them cheaper somewhere, only one art shop in darwin u see so they can charge stuff really high....bastards

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Diin-kun In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-09-24 04:05:12 +0000 UTC]

Lol yeah I like sold it a few days after I 'finished' it, to my uncle, like cause he commissioned me to do him something. Oh really! That's expensive. I just assumed I could pick some up at Big W. I'll have to have a look around at some art supply shops in the city.

It sucks when they do that, but they'll charge more in the city for stuff everyone gets too like Maccas and stuff.

LyrebirdJacki In reply to Diin-kun [2009-09-24 05:42:41 +0000 UTC]
